The histories of the US and the Solomon Islands have long been intertwined, from the missionaries who preached the Gospels to the Marines and soldiers who liberated Guadalcanal in WWII. A bit of trivia: two of the portraits hanging above the high table are anachronistic.

The Expulsion of the Fellows, 1687 (1884) depicts Bishop Waynflete’s portrait as flanked by portraits of two Magdalen Fellows: John Warner, Bishop of Rochester, and theologian Henry Hammond.

Both were influential fellows around the time of the Civil War; Hammond’s death came just days before the Restoration, and Warner’s in 1666.
