EXCLUSIVE: Leading industry groups including defence body ADS, TheCityUK and MakeUK, will release a joint statement tomorrow accusing the government of "crippling" confidence in the defence sector by delaying and curtailing, the Defence Investment Plan. https://t.co/65sIajVtDo
A techUK survey of 45 defence technology suppliers has found 93% reassessing investment or recruitment, 73% hit by contract suspensions and 87% by funding delays, with the unpublished Defence Investment Plan named as the single biggest driver.

So true. Walked up to Camden tonight from the House of Commons..the Christmas lights, shoppers in Seven Dials, the quiet of Bloomsbury’s squares, Soul II Soul in concert at Koko. No city in the world like it
On both sides of the Atlantic, procurement is a hugely underrated policy lever. In the UK, we spend c. £400bn a year through intermediaries.
But when I was a civil servant the topic was considered pretty disinteresting by most senior people.
Really concerning. Defence of the West requires weapons, companies need to make weapons. Frustrating to see so many institutions lining up against national sovereignty.
Britain's ability to support Ukraine is being held back by outdated ESG rules that are stopping banks and financial institutions from investing in our defence sector on the grounds that it is ‘unethical’. (1/3)
EXC: More than 100 Labour MPs and peers have urged British banks/fund managers to stop viewing all defence investments as “unethical”, in bid to boost UK arms industry

There is an aggressor: Russia.
There is a victim: Ukraine.
We were right to help Ukraine and sanction Russia three years ago—and to keep doing so.
By “we,” I mean the Americans, the Europeans, the Canadians, the Japanese, and many others.
Thank you to all who have helped and continue to do so. And respect to those who have been fighting since the beginning—because they are fighting for their dignity, their independence, their children, and the security of Europe.
Rachel Reeves reportedly considering zonal pricing “to drive growth in Britain’s advanced manufacturing sector and encourage businesses to build factories in regions with abundant, cheaper energy.” 👏👏👏👏
Great to see this vital step backed by pro-growth Labour MPs:
AI is going to transform our economy and society.
With our AI Opportunities Action Plan, we will be in the driving seat of innovation, boosting growth and prosperity.
And we'll ensure that the technology benefits everyone from every part of the country, equally.
@bbclaurak
@rcolvile Worse really when you remember that Abi Tierney who lead that transformation isn’t sitting in a position of authority overseeing similar projects but rather leading Welsh rugby (firepan & fire!)
best use of AI yet? UK mobile operator O2 has created a human-like AI “Granny” to answer calls in real time from fraudsters, wasting as much of their time as possible 😅 https://t.co/4FOaNKYALY
Personally believe that nuclear has a big role to play.
But we shouldn’t do ourselves down - we are a global leader in building and operating Data Centres (with AI ones in the pipe). Much more we can do but over £20bn announced in last 12 months too!
Really great and detailed piece on what it would take for the UK to win in AI infrastructure: tl;dr, get serious about nuclear. We have all the levers we need.
