@Alex_Berwick It’s hard to know. All our XIs have been last years fringe players - Maatsen, Lindelof, Mings, Barkley, Buendia, Abraham. Our slow start has little to do with balance and more that we’ve not been able to field our new players yet due to injury, suspension, late signings. #avfc

Love Emery but if we don’t score/win for first 5 games every season why don’t we concentrate on structure on the training pitch. And then have first few games as a free-hit/more chaotic? Probably pick up more points/goals. #avfc

I do also think Gomes will be nailed on first choice and Goretzka will play more of a Barkley role - In/out team, brought on when we need to control game. #avfc

@avfcbreaking Not sure many of these stats are useful. Duel success is prob main stat and the comparison isn’t great. Other stats more indicative of the teams they played for. CB in struggling team will always have more blocks, clearances, etc. Russell Martin CB will make lots of passes. #avfc

Unai Emery said he cried after saying goodbye to Ollie Watkins. Confirms @TheAthleticFC story that Watkins apologised & cleared the air after "disappointment" for missing Brighton.

@DHucks6 Hardly fuming. Needed a refresh, probably wouldn’t have done it all in one summer but we’ve brought in a lot of quality replacements. Get a decent CB and no10/RW to end the window and we’ll have better balanced squad than last year. #avfc

@VillaViews_ Isn’t it a bit more straightforward? To get everyone we want, this needed to be a loan. Palace can and have offered a permanent fee. You can question whether we should prioritise a CB and so use our money here rather than (eg) another winger… but wouldn’t say VERY wrong. #avfc

Final memories of the departing players is achieving European football 4 years on the spin & lifting a trophy for us after a 30 year wait… absolutely zero issues from me & wish them the best. They’ve given us some elite awaydays in Europe & memories to last forever.. we move on

1/ ageing squad that needed freshening up
2/ when Emery first came in, the team reacted immediately. No reason that can’t apply to a team full of new signings
3/ it’s exciting - in a Football Manager type of way - to have host of new faces

Aston Villa can confirm that the club’s appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport regarding the registration of Brian Madjo has been upheld.

17-year-old Madjo signed for the club from Metz in January. Born in Enfield, London and a UK citizen, he left England at a young age and was raised in Luxembourg but has been unable to play due to FIFA‘s rules on the international transfer of minors.

The striker has scored four goals in pre-season so far, including two in the opening friendly fixture against Walsall.

The court’s decision today means that Brian will be registered as an Aston Villa player and eligible to play in official competition matches for the forthcoming season.

@espenstrand I’d give him time to develop and he’s got the raw physical attributes. Not sure about the going forward bit yet…. He seems to have heavy touch and poor weight of pass from what I’ve seen so far. #avfc

@NobbyTrumpet Howe has done brilliant. But there’s only 3 managers who have managed in the Premier League for that length of time and the other two are above him. So he’s third in a 3 horse race here.
