Play offense on defense. Let the ball (your instincts and read) dictate whether you need to retreat and lengthen the hop. Don’t fall into the trap of automatically taking drop steps.

If you’re on time with your prep-step and your eyes are in the imaginary strike zone of the hitter, you’ll know almost immediately whether the play requires a drop step to create more space and make the hop more manageable.

And remember: you don’t need fancy gadgets, pitch-backs, or eye-catching drills to get game ready. A wall, some open space, and a tennis racket can be all you need to develop elite defensive skills.
