A particularly chilly morning here in Boston today, but if you’re enjoying the sun in San Diego for #BMES2025, don’t miss Dr. Leyla Esfandiari, Ph.D.’s talk on our work — highlighting the final piece of my thesis!🧪
Happy to share that I successfully defended my PhD last week! Grateful for the support, mentorship, and collaborations that shaped my graduate journey.
Looking forward to joining the Peyton lab at Tufts University Biomedical Engineering as a postdoctoral fellow this fall!
We also identify enriched pathways by overlapping sequencing data from parental spheroids and derived EV progeny to probe cell-EVs communication in our model. More migration, motility, and cancer-associated cell hallmark pathways were enriched in the stiff matrix groups. 🧫
Our newest preprint is live! 🎉 We probe the influence of matrix-stiffness on the secretion and cargo of extracellular vesicles from 3D oral squamous cell carcinoma spheroids. (1/n)
Genetic analysis looking at microRNA and long non-coding RNAs in EVs identify increasingly tumorigenic profiles, identified as biomarkers in head and neck cancers, to be enhanced in stiff ECM EVs 🧬
While I was in India, I did something I hadn’t done in a very long time—I took pen to paper and wrote my mom a letter. As I wrote, I reflected on how much India, and I, have changed over the years.
The last time I wrote a letter to my mom was 20 years ago, when I was accepted into Rice University. In that letter, I thanked her for her patience as I figured out my purpose and shared with her that I had finally found my way.
That moment marked a turning point in my life. It was the beginning of a journey that not only shaped my career but transformed me as a person. Returning to India— not just as someone visiting home, but as an officer of the very university that gave me a safe harbor so many years ago—reawakened a deep sense of gratitude in me.
Rice gave me the opportunity to pull myself up and out of where I was. It didn’t just open doors to a career; it reshaped me entirely—broadening my worldview and helping me understand the value of curiosity, resilience, and meaningful connections within a tight-knit community of dreamers, thinkers, and doers.
While in India, I was struck by the remarkable growth all around me—new industries, new opportunities, and new energy. But just as India has grown, I’ve been reflecting on my own growth since that pivotal moment when higher education became my pathway to a better life.
Education, when done right, has the power to transform lives—not just economically, but personally. It makes us better citizens, better leaders, and better humans.
As I finished the letter to my mom, I realized it wasn’t just about saying thank you. It was about acknowledging the profound impact of pivotal moments like these—the decisions to pursue something bigger than ourselves—and how they ripple outward, changing lives for generations.
Higher education is so much more than degrees and jobs. It’s about empowerment, transformation, and growth. It’s about lifting people up so they can not only reach their potential but also help others along the way. And for that, I’ll always be grateful......
Wishing you all a very wonderful and happy Thanksgiving, wherever you may be today.

Illustrator decided to go outline mode on me and the five something minutes it took to fix it reminded me of sophomore year summer spent working with HVAC drawings. 👩🏻🔧➡️👩🏻🔬
It's an incredible feeling to see this project take off! We truly believe this will be an amazing experience for both mentees and mentors. The future of the EV field looks amazing! Grateful to everyone involved in making this happen! @SNEVresearch@IsevOrg
Most people who work on #ExtracellularVesicles from multicellular organisms and cell culture are studying the ones that float around freely. @DrMarleyDewey is not most people! She works on #EVs that bind to the #ECM extracellular matrix. These “matrix-binding vesicles” #MBVs are distinct compositionally and functionally from other EVs, reports Marley. Several examples here at #ISEVxTECH of how they can also serve as immunomodulatory therapies.
@IsevOrg
Just returned from a short, but productive trip to Chicago for the @czbiohub Chicago Bioengineering conference. I wanted to list some take home points I gathered from the meeting! (A thread).
Uh-oh...look what @LiamHourigan6 just started! Memes on #ExtracellularVesicles
Please post or send me your #MISEV2023 memes. If they're good, or especially BAD like mine (lower right panel), I might just feature them on next week's #EVClub!
