In the world of ideologies and activism, one thing is certain: contradiction is not the exception but the rule. Left, right, progressive, conservative – all abandon principles as long as it serves their narrative. Truth? A relic of the past. Instead, division reigns, and emotions overshadow reason. Welcome to the circus of populism.

The Left: Principles for Sale

Equality, diversity, freedom – the noble slogans of the Left. But how do we explain that the same activists defending LGBTQ+ rights and democracy simultaneously support regimes and movements that suppress all of these?

Take pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Israel is demonized as the aggressor, while the systematic oppression of women and persecution of homosexuals in Palestinian territories are ignored. Political Islam, an ideology that despises everything the Left supposedly stands for, is romanticized. Principles? Nowhere to be found.

Or feminism: fiercely defended in Western countries, yet when it comes to Islamic veiling, it is suddenly glorified as "self-determination." A betrayal masked as cultural sensitivity.

The debate over COVID vaccinations takes this contradiction to a new height. The Left categorically defended pandemic measures – no matter how draconian. Meanwhile, the pharmaceutical industry, otherwise the poster child of exploitative capitalism, became the untouchable savior. A sector that raked in billions was suddenly celebrated as humanity’s redeemer. Critical voices? "Dangerous." The contradiction? Unbelievable.

The Right: Saints of Double Standards

The Right claims "common sense" and "truth" for itself. But hypocrisy reigns here as well.

An example? The Right portrays itself as Israel’s greatest defender – not out of genuine solidarity, but because Israel’s nationalism fits into their worldview and serves as a counterpoint to Islamic states, also their enemy. Simultaneously, they court anti-Semitic groups spouting "Jewish world conspiracy" rhetoric and stirring up anti-Semitic resentment. Pure opportunism.

Another contradiction: The Right preaches nationalism and the protection of national values, yet they are deeply intertwined with international networks and openly sympathize with authoritarian regimes. Be it Russia, Hungary, or Brazil – dictators undermining democratic institutions are celebrated as "strong leaders." Democracy? Only when it serves their interests.

The populist Right has also recently embraced the guise of "conservatism." They claim to restore "reason" and "traditional values." But a closer look reveals that it often boils down to undermining democratic institutions. Simultaneously, they present themselves as defenders of free speech while systematically smearing, distorting, and silencing critical voices to secure their power. Instead of addressing important questions, they attack and discredit anyone who dares to ask.

One of the latest tools of the populist Right is the narrative of the "Woke Mind Virus," which, while in some cases a legitimate critique of threats to freedom and individuality, is increasingly misused to justify absurd claims. For instance, Adolf Hitler, a far-right fascist whose regime murdered hundreds of thousands of communists, is now being reframed by figures like Alice Weidel as a "communist, socialist type." Even Elon Musk has amplified this distortion, suggesting that recognizing Hitler’s far-right extremism is somehow "woke." This manipulation of "woke" serves to blur historical and societal clarity while pushing grotesque claims into mainstream discourse. It’s less about common sense and more about creating a convenient enemy and reframing the agenda in a morally favorable light.

Gaslighting: The Art of Distortion

Gaslighting is the favorite weapon of both sides. It is the art of accusing the opponent of precisely what one is guilty of.

The Left accuses the Right of threatening free speech while simultaneously engaging in "cancel culture" to suppress dissenting voices. Anyone not aligned with the progressive agenda is labeled "toxic" or "backward." Notable examples can be found in academia, where professors with politically incorrect positions face career bans or public shaming. Likewise, scientists who discussed alternative risks during the COVID crisis were branded "conspiracists" or "unsupportive" instead of having their arguments rationally evaluated.

The Right cries "fake news" while actively spreading falsehoods. Scientifically proven facts about climate change are dismissed as manipulation, while alternative "truths," such as denying human influence on the climate, are propagated. Another example is the persistent claims of voter fraud in the 2020 U.S. elections, repeated without evidence to undermine trust in democratic institutions.

More explosive still: both sides accuse each other of politicizing the judiciary. The Left criticizes right-wing interference in courts, while the Right alleges that left-wing "activist judges" are bending the law. The result? Both sides systematically erode trust in the judiciary. The consequence? A deeply divided society that no longer sees the judiciary as neutral.

Populism: The Strategy of Contradiction

Populism thrives where politics fails. Decades of neglected reforms and ignored grievances, combined with the trivialization of pressing issues, provide fertile ground. People are frustrated, insecure – and open to simple solutions. This is where populism steps in, using a tactic that prioritizes emotion over reason. Facts are replaced with scapegoats, and contradiction becomes the strategy.

The Left romanticizes oppression as long as it fits their narrative. The Right glorifies democracy while supporting authoritarian structures. Both sides are equally part of the problem.

Who is the Enemy?

The true enemy is not the Left or the Right. It is hypocrisy. Populism never ends in reasonable compromise. It ends with the erosion of fundamental rights, the concentration of power and wealth in the hands of a few, and – ultimately – war. A system that declares the enemy as the ultimate evil leaves only one path: their destruction. Examples abound: from authoritarian regimes silencing opponents in the name of "the people" to corrupt networks enriching themselves under the guise of "resistance." This dynamic is not the exception but the rule of populist politics.

The true friend? They remain a friend only as long as they refrain from expressing dissent or questioning too critically. The critical, still unanswered question is: What role does "free speech" play in the 21st century? If it no longer matters who speaks the truth, if it is no longer about who is officially allowed to speak, but solely about who has the loudest voice and the widest reach, and who can make dissenters targets of public hatred, who needs official censorship anymore?
