There are three types of employees when it comes to ownership:
1. Those who take ownership unprompted. (Rare gems)
2. Those who take ownership once explicitly assigned. (The backbone of most great companies)
3. Those who never take ownership, even when named the project lead. (A hopeless cause)
Most leaders complain they don't have enough of #1, so they assume everyone else is #3.
That is an expensive mistake.
The vast majority of high-impact talent sits squarely in Group 2. They have professional respect for boundaries—they don't run around grabbing projects that aren't theirs.
But once you say, "This is your ship to steer," they will bleed for the result. You actually have to give them the wheel.
If you assign a Group 2 operator a project, but keep your hands on the controls, you kill their instinct to own it. They need the friction of figuring it out alone. They need true, hands-off autonomy.
If someone isn't stepping up, ask yourself: are they truly passive, or are you just refusing to let go?
Which archetype are you though?

reached out to a creator for a ugc video and got the “if you’re using the video for paid ads, there’s an additional cost” response.
if i’m commissioning ugc for my brand, what exactly do you think i’m commissioning it for? decoration? 😭
imagine photographer charging me extra because i want to use the product photos they shot for me on my e-commerce website or for promotional graphic designs. because charging me separately after the fact for the primary commercial purpose of the content is where it gets confusing.
are we sure we’re all okay? 😭
Never prepare for a presentation, speech or an interview using the voice in your head. It is far more eloquent and fluent than you actually are in reality.
