@smerconish Based on the past, increased taxes would just lead to goneenemmt spending and wasting even more. Thats why I think these kind of discussions are pointless.
@guestfolio@smerconish I dont want any free stuff. But I dont want to be taxed more for more stupid government spending. Stop wasting everyone's money, and don't give any free stuff.
I'd maybe accept higher taxes if I saw huge meaningful spending cuts and real efforts on financial responsibility for the government. But without that first, why offer to pay more taxes if that will just be wasted too. I'll take zero social security if you return the contributions by both me and my employer, and let me investment while I still have a little bit of time before I retire otherwise, fuck off because you're not serious.
@Gregor1313 There are things called unintended consequences, trade offs, who does it better, what you get or don't get in different scenarios, costs based on how it works, a lot of items to look at and debate. It's not as obvious and simple as you are trying to make it out to be.
Lefties asking people on the right if they regret their vote over the dept of ed getting scaled way down. Many conservatives might have issues with Trump, but getting rid of the department of ed is something conservatives have wanted forever. Trump seems to be the actual first guy ever to finally do anything about it. Many of us believe the federal government doesn't belong in local education, and cause more harm than any any good. That is definitely not one of their beefs with him. Did you think you were making an amazing point? Lol
@compliantvc Besides being a dumb idea, I don't think your math works. Taxing billionaires 35% doesn't mean necessarily mean there is enough money to make every other person 35% wealthier.
@MattWalshBlog Demanding people to take up causes is such woke progressive cry babyism. Your takes get worse and worse everyday. You're not a conservative bro.
1) The problem of high grocery prices is global, not just in the US
2) These rises are the result of horrible worldwide govt Covid-19 policy
3) Prices aren't coming down...and there's nothing the govt can do but make it worse
4) If Matt were a conservative, he'd know this
I needed to move a sofa.
I mentioned this to an American. He said, "You know anybody with a truck?"
I did not know anybody with a truck.
He looked at me with real concern. Not pity. Concern. The way you look at a man who has told you he does not have a name.
"You gotta know somebody with a truck."
I asked how one acquires such a person.
He said, "You just do."
This is the third time I have received that answer in this country. It is the answer to everything here. You just do. There is no process. There is only the eventual fact of having.
He said, "Ask Kevin."
I do not know a Kevin. He said Kevin like I should. He said it the way you say a shared uncle.
I met Kevin four days later. Kevin owns a truck. Kevin does not own a truck for himself. Nobody owns a truck for themselves. Kevin owns a truck for a fifteen mile radius.
Inside I said: THIS MAN HAS TAKEN A VOW. HE DID NOT ANNOUNCE IT. HE SIMPLY PURCHASED A BED AND ACCEPTED THE CONSEQUENCES.
Kevin arrived on Saturday. He brought the truck. He also brought a second man.
I had not asked for a second man.
The second man's name is Tony. Tony came because Kevin came. Tony did not know me. Tony did not ask what we were moving. Tony brought gloves.
They moved the sofa in eleven minutes.
I offered them money. Both of them laughed at the same time, which felt rehearsed and was not.
I asked what I owed them.
Kevin said, "Buy the pizza."
That is the price. That is the entire economy. The truck costs one pizza and the pizza is not negotiable and the pizza is also not expensive and everyone knows what size.
Inside I said: THE FEE IS FIXED ACROSS THE ENTIRE NATION AND WAS SET BY NO ONE.
We ate on the floor because the sofa was against the wall and none of us wanted to be the first to sit on it.
Tony told me his daughter plays soccer. I asked if she is good. He said, "She's aggressive."
I still think about that.
Three weeks later, Kevin texted me.
"You free Sunday? Helping Tony move a fridge."
He did not ask if I wanted to. He informed me of a fridge.
Inside I said: I HAVE BEEN CALLED UP. I DID NOT ENLIST. THE PAPERS WERE FILED ON MY BEHALF.
I went. I moved the fridge. I have no truck. I contributed only arms.
Afterward, a man I had never met asked me if I knew anybody with a truck.
I said, "Yeah, I got a guy."
I have a guy.
I am somebody's guy now, too. Tony has told two people about me.
He describes me as "the guy who's strong for his size."
I have never been prouder of a sentence in my life.
I'm just reading this, so late to the game and even though you probably have already realized this, and people have been telling you Achilles is not in the movie. Yes, I know he is in the poem, as you kept repeating, but in the movie he isn't. So you can criticize page being in it, but your complaint said page was playing Achilles, when anyone who saw the movie clearly saw that wasn't the case. Made you sound like a
Liar.
I’m not scared. I think you guys will fail because your ideas are stupid and very, very, old and will fail wherever put into practice. Price controls are older than Christianity, for instance. Your Mao schtick is moronic and takes advantage of your fans’ ignorance. I think you’re a cosplaying radical kid of privilege and apologist for murderers and terrorists. But you’re not scary dude. You’re a poseur. I think it’s hilarious you streamed my comments to your easily duped fans.
@hughfuckinglass@realsashastone Don't know what edition you read, but I read Fagles in May. Story structure followed poem, cyclops, giants, circle, land of dead, scylla, sun god cattle, storm, Calypso, home, suitors... That's like 85% straight out of book, in order too
Anne Frank is a historical figure. Are you trying to say that Helen was real? Homer gave us epic poems, he was never trying to give us true history. And in the Odyssey, she was a small character. If you want to me mad about a fictional small character being black, I'm not going to take away from you. Go be mad. But make better comparisons in the mean time.
This is less an argument than a collection of caricatures.
Pro-lifers don’t need the Bible to argue that intentionally killing an innocent human being is wrong. The argument can be made from embryology and moral philosophy.
Conservatives generally don’t believe “immigrants are bad.” They argue over illegal immigration, border sovereignty, assimilation, security, labor markets, and immigration levels.
And capitalism apparently existed in an intellectual vacuum until Ronald Reagan? Smith, Locke, Hayek, Friedman and several centuries of political economy might have something to say about that.
Yes, conservatives are underrepresented in academia. But jumping from that fact to “therefore conservatives are incurious” is not scholarship. It’s ideological self-congratulation masquerading as an explanation.
There are incurious conservatives. There are incurious progressives. Curiosity is not a partisan trait.
Ironically, reducing opposing viewpoints to “Bible/Fox News/Reagan told them so” rather than seriously engaging their strongest arguments is a pretty good example of the incuriosity you’re accusing everyone else of.
