Hitting is about making hard, consistent contact. Our swing development should be focused on swing adjustability based on hard contact. My dad used to say, “hit the ball hard, what happens after that is out of your control.”

Hitting the ball hard consists of a lengthy, flat bat path through the zone. (When I say lengthy I mean barrel time in the hitting zone) The best hitters I played with worked on hitting line drives up the middle. If you’re a little late, you go oppo, if you are a little early, you pull it.

Very rarely do good hitters pull(down the line) inside fastballs. I know this because I was a decent hitter once, and also I know that the majority of pitches are located middle to away. Knowing these numbers, good hitters look middle to away, hunting the part of the plate that have the highest probably of seeing a pitch.

An old game calling adage goes as such…
“Pitch good hitters in, and bad hitters away.”

As a catcher I also knew from my game prep and pitch calling that pitchers have a hard time locating inside consistently. Either they miss in off, paint the corner, or that yank it back over middle in. That’s why you see majority of pitches located away from the hitter.

I heard @RealCJ10 say that he would try and hit the ball off the center field wall. Every great hitter (.300 type) I played with had very similar approaches. As for myself, I always tried to hit the ball off the pitchers face.

If you want to be a great hitter, develop the ability to take any pitch, in any location, and drive it up the middle to the other way. That will give you a high probably bat path with room for error. Room for error means that your timing (pitchers main job is to disrupt hitters timing) doesn’t have to be perfect every time because your bat bath is lengthy and flat through the zone. Great hitters get jammed and still get knocks. Depending on the amount of at bats, 15-20 of those a year is the difference between .300 and .250.

When I played with Beltre, he would take the first three rounds of BP to hit line drives at the second baseman. Pitch location did not matter. Manny Ramirez would do the same, as well as Pujols. Many other guys I played with, including myself, would do the same as part of our routine.
