Christina Assi, a dedicated photo journalist with AFP , carried the Olympic torch, this afternoon in Paris, alongside her colleague Dylan Collins. This symbolic act of resilience and unity came after Christina lost her leg and Dylan sustained injuries when, last October, Israel targeted a group of journalists in Alma al-Shaab, South Lebanon, resulting in the death of Reuters photographer Issam Abdullah and injuries to several other journalists.
Journalists like Christina, Dylan, and Issam embody the values of courage, integrity, and the relentless pursuit of truth. They put their lives on the line to ensure the world stays informed, often braving dangerous and volatile environments. The targeting of journalists is an egregious violation of press freedom and human rights. Such acts not only endanger the lives of those who seek to report the truth but also undermine the fundamental principles of a free and open society.
Freedom of the press is a cornerstone of democracy, and the sacrifices made by journalists underscore the high cost of protecting this freedom. It is essential to stand against any actions that threaten journalists and to support efforts to ensure their safety and security. The bravery and dedication of journalists like Christina Assi and her colleagues remind us of the critical role they play in shining a light on the truth, no matter how high the personal cost.
