Anyone who was following Syria at the time would know that it was the Biden admin that was quietly facilitating normalization efforts with the Assad regime through failing to enforce the Caesar Act and offering tacit approval of re-engagement through a U.S.-backed Arab Gas Pipeline workaround aimed at alleviating the energy crisis in Lebanon, which would mean energy supplies would have transitioned directly through Syrian territory under Assad.
The argument that the US was the puppeteer behind Assad’s downfall never made sense as the data pointed more to an America that was silently permitting the regimes presence, then later accepting it to the point where the US felt comfortable indirectly re-engaging.
Hassan Akkad posted this 25 minutes ago on Instagram. In addition to his personal experiences with the law, I am assuming it also has to do with Ahmad al Sharaa’s response regarding the open case of Assad-era financier Hamsho
Zionist authorities construct these policies to deprive Palestinians, making their lives ever-harder in this ongoing genocide. Millions of Palestinians in Gaza remain displaced without proper shelter or access to private toilets. Now they face $700 costs to replace a toilet seat.
Zionist authorities have now classified toilets as "dual use items", banning the entry of portable toilets and toilet seats into the Gaza Strip. Toilet seats join tarps, sleeping bags, wheelchairs, sewage pumps, and medical supplies among many other banned items.
I disagree with Motaz on many of his views, but in the face of the Israeli and pro-Israel campaign now targeting him, I put those disagreements aside.
Motaz speaks with his usual simplicity and describes his experience as he lived it and understands it. Yet somehow, his words are now being presented as a stunning “confirmation” that Gaza’s journalists were affiliated with Hamas or reporting under its direction. He said nothing of the sort.
He said some journalists chose not to film anti-Hamas messages. Apparently, we are now expected to treat that as evidence of Hamas control. In the middle of Israel’s devastating assault, when such footage could easily be weaponized to shift attention away from what was happening in Gaza, journalists making such choices is hardly extraordinary. Israel itself subjects its media to military censorship on national security grounds.
Then there is the WhatsApp group. Journalists in Gaza—including those working with international agencies—rely on countless such groups to exchange news and information, particularly with foreign journalists largely prevented from independently entering Gaza. Hundreds of journalists participate in them, often across multiple groups. Yet one group, some comments, and one Hamas-affiliated participant are somehow being stretched into a theory about Gaza’s entire press corps.
My reading is much simpler: Motaz was angry at certain individuals and comments in one such group. His emotional description may have left room for a broader interpretation. It certainly does not establish that Gaza’s journalists were organized or directed by Hamas.
The same remarkable logic is being applied to his decision not to publish images of Israeli captives. Motaz explained that he feared Israel might target civilians who happened to appear in the streets as captives were being taken through them. Somehow, even this is being used against him. In reality, it tells us far more about the fear under which Gaza’s journalists and civilians were living than it does about his journalistic integrity.
And Motaz himself was one of those journalists. He can tell you what it meant to sleep in the streets because of Israeli threats, to work under bombardment and displacement, and to keep documenting what was happening around him.
Disagree with Motaz. Challenge his opinions. Debate every word if you wish. But turning these remarks into an indictment of Gaza’s journalists—who kept reporting through bombardment, hunger, displacement and devastating personal loss—requires reading into his words things he simply did not say.

Graduates of the Faculty of Medicine at the Islamic University of #Gaza light their phones during the graduation ceremony of the university’s 15th medical cohort in Gaza City, in a symbolic gesture reflecting the determination to continue education despite the devastation.
During the genocide in Gaza, the Israeli military bombed, destroyed or damaged nearly all of the strip's university buildings.
Good morning from Gaza, where the first thing we rebuild is education.
Palestinian human rights lawyer Noura Erakat was arrested in Florida after speaking against a billion-dollar investment in Israel Bonds during a public budget hearing. At least 100 residents protesting the investment were also forced to leave the hearing.
What are we doing here people? His whole narrative here is a textbook example of liberal zionist thought. On top of being a problematic filmmaker (read Bassem Khandaqji’s piece on the film). This swooning over him is actually repulsive.
