#Neuropsychiatry in Latin America? 🤔
I'm glad to share our new paper! 😅
Thanks to @vaughanbell, who made it possible!
Thanks to @nanosanta@WilliamTamayoA1@juliotorales & Latin Amarican colleagues!

Towards a Latin American neuropsychiatry

@JRBneuropsiq Finding cognitive signals in motor areas shouldn’t surprise anyone familiar with embodied cognition. What’s unexpected is the degree: these areas don’t just “participate”—they encode cognitive variables strongly, precisely, and even without any movement being prepared.
@JRBneuropsiq This shows that sometimes a good mega-analysis is better than a meta-analysis — especially when the question depends on individual-level trajectories rather than aggregated study statistics.
@JRBneuropsiq Proxemics has clear clinical uses: from supporting autistic patients in reading social space, to trauma therapy where regulating closeness restores trust. Even in psychiatry, personal space can be diagnostic — a reminder that distance also speaks.
@JRBneuropsiq At the low level, it’s not only the neurochemical effect but also the site: the salience network. That’s why, at the cognitive level, SSRIs reduce negative bias in evaluating reality. Hence, they’re more effective for anxiety symptoms than for mood itself.
@JRBneuropsiq An example of this behavior is navigating social networks like X: an ambiguous, poorly structured environment where success means reducing chaos into simple rules. A patient with an FPl lesion might read tweets but fail to know when to ignore or anticipate conflict.
@JRBneuropsiq There is a conceptual problem: gradualism erodes the boundary of the term “consciousness”; we risk diluting it or multiplying ad hoc subcategories.
