.@chucktodd: What do you think the hesitance has been in the black community with [@AbdulElSayed]?

@RepAndreCarson: I think it dates back to the earlier part of the 20th century, where you had Muslims in Michigan, particularly Detroit. You had the Ahmadiyya movement. You had the the great Morris Science Temple. You had the Nation of Islam, you had Sunni Islam. And the communities were together in some regards, but they were also segregated. And as society changed, you had civil rights accomplishments.

That divide grew wider because you had immigrant brothers and sisters who were legally white but socially nonwhite. And I think they leaned into what they thought were white was whiteness. But you still had Muslim gas station owners selling pork and alcohol to black folks. And I think that stirred a deep level of resentment. And I think there was a level of religiosity that betrayed what was happening on the ground.

And so on one end, African American Muslim organizations were able to establish Islam through the lens of black Americans, which did a lot more. I think in terms of the reputation at the time than other immigrant groups, so that that tension is still there. I don't want to speak on behalf of Michiganders. But he acknowledged that tension very wisely, and I think he'll get past it.

@chucktodd: It's interesting that when I asked you about it, you went there. And yet we just saw in Wisconsin. That was more of an ideological fight. In the African-American community. Decidedly went against the progressive and went with Mr. Crowley.

@RepAndreCarson: I think a lot of the progressive rhetoric, you know, Malcolm X talked about, you know, being suspicious of the white liberal, right. So I think there's there's there's a sentiment there within the black community about the progressive talk where you see elected officials coming to cookouts, doing the electric slide boots on the ground, and then they get into office and they vote against the black communities interest. Those days are over.

@chucktodd: So this is just accumulated distrust.

@RepAndreCarson: Without question. That's why it's so many African-American males in particular went for Donald Trump. It was a sense of betrayal by the Democratic Party.

California today became the first state in the nation to create rules limiting the kind of replacement tires people can buy for their car, pushing energy efficiency.

We were the only TV crew (maybe only news org) in the room when the California Energy Commission voted on this.

The CEC has not regulated tires before.

Nearly 17,000 students disappeared from LAUSD enrollment in just one year, a 4.5% drop. And compared to two decades ago, enrollment is down roughly 43%.
