Her Excellency, the British High Commissioner for Uganda @LisaJChesney congratulates the achievements of METGE for our efforts to distribute 25 million trees. Thank you ! @sizeofwales@UKinUganda
In November 2022, we planted our very first tree in the degraded strip of Mount Elgon National Park. Since then, we have successfully restored more than 150 hectares of degraded forest landscape across Masira and Bumugibole sub-counties within the park . @sizeofwales
in addition, beekeeping and vegetable growing have provided alternative sources of income, helping communities reduce their dependence on the park’s natural resources.
With support from the @ITF_Worldwide (ITF), we have restored 70 hectares of degraded land within Mount Elgon National Park in Masira and Bumugibole sub-counties in Bulambuli District. @sizeofwales@WelshGovernment
@ITF_Worldwide Through this work, community members have gained access to affordable loans that are improving their livelihoods.
Since 2023, METGE has restored over 150 hectares of the MT Elgon National Park through support from other partners Admiral Group Plc AND EKCT.
For many women, access to loans once seemed impossible. Today, through Village Savings and Loan Associations strengthened by METGE and partners, women can support their families and secure a brighter future. @sizeofwales@WelshGovernment
@ITF_Worldwide Through the Tree Planting for Improved Livelihood project, earned income through their savings groups, and also benefited from a seed fund, which strengthened and improved financial stability at the household level.
𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡: Out of METGE’s 24 tree nursery sites, 10 are women-led, reflecting a strong, deliberate commitment to gender inclusion and the understanding that meaningful environmental restoration begins with empowering women at the grassroots level.
NTV Uganda featured a News story highlighting their contribution to environmental restoration and community transformation, further amplifying their vital role in advancing climate action in Uganda. 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞

𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇 - Since 2010, METGE has raised, distributed, and planted over 25 million trees across the Mount Elgon region, transforming degraded landscapes into thriving ecosystems while improving the livelihoods of thousands of households. @sizeofwales@WelshGovernment
These engagements created a meaningful opportunity to interact directly with farmers, provide practical guidance on tree management, and collect feedback to inform and improve implementation.
@sizeofwales@WelshGovernment
We carried out a joint monitoring exercise with our implementing partners, Bungokho Rural Development Center (BRDC) and Mount Elgon Agroforestry Communities Cooperative Enterprise in Mbale, Sironko, and Bulambuli tree nurseries, to track progress and the impact of tree-planting.
The exercise generated insights into the status of tree nurseries, confirming that seedlings are healthy and properly managed for distribution. Field visits to farmers also enabled us to assess the survival and performance of planted trees, as well as identify challenges .
The struggle for clean water is now greatly reduced, and women no longer have to walk long distances in search of water, freeing up time for household and productive activities while improving overall well-being in the community. #Diolch
This water project in Bumaeana, Mbale District, is part of the tree growing programme supported by the @WelshGovernment through @sizeofwales . It not only supports the Bumaeana Community tree nursery site but also serves the surrounding community.
The solar-powered water system now benefits 10 villages in Bumaean Parish, Bukiende Subcounty, significantly improving access to clean and reliable water for both community use and nursery operations.
