تعود كلمة "طاقة" إلى الجذر (ط - و - ق)، وتدل على الإحاطة بالشيء ككلمة "طَوْق" التي تعني ما يحيط الرأس أو العنق من زينة. كما تدل على الإطاقة وما يستطيع الإنسان فعله أو تحمّله، ووردت في القرآن الكريم: ﴿وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ﴾، أي ما لا قدرة لنا على تحمّله.
