The fireflies are starting to go dark. The adults have served their purpose and are at the end of their lives. What you do to your yard between now and spring decides whether they come back next year.

Every adult firefly that flashed this summer has already laid eggs in your soil and leaf litter. Those eggs are hatching right now into larvae that will spend the next one to two years underground hunting slugs and snails.

They're doing pest control in your soil through fall, overwinter in the leaf litter, and resume next spring. The larvae underground right now are next summer's firefly show.

Grub treatments and fall pesticide applications kill them. Raking and bagging all your leaf litter removes the habitat they overwinter in. Porch lights left on disrupt the mating signals of the last adults still flying this week.

The action items are mostly subtractions: skip the fall pesticide application, leave the leaf litter, turn the porch light off when you go to bed.

The fireflies don't need much. They need the soil left alone and the leaf litter left in place.

For fourteen years it was against federal rules to hand an American child a carton of whole milk with his school lunch. Fat free chocolate milk, with the sugar in it, was fine the entire time.

The USDA drew the line at 1% for the 2011 to 2012 school year. Whole and 2% were not reimbursable, which when you are feeding thirty million children a day on federal money is the same word as banned.

So the cooler ran like this.

- Fat free milk: allowed.
- Fat free chocolate milk: allowed.
- 1% milk: allowed.
- 2% milk: not reimbursable.
- Whole milk: not reimbursable.

Work out what a nine year old picks.

He picks the chocolate one, because skimmed milk is a glass of white water. Which is exactly why flavoured milk survived every round of this and the whole stuff did not. The sugar was the price of getting a child to drink what was left after the cream came out.

And the cream was the point. A, D, E and K travel in the fat. Take the fat out and the vitamins go with it, so the processor sprays A and D back in and prints it on the carton as a favour.

Servings fell. Millions of unopened cartons went in the bin.

Whole milk went back on the line on 14 January 2026. One entire generation of American schoolchildren, start to finish, drinking the version with the good part taken out and the sugar left in.
