Yesterday morning, while I was riding in a Keke Napep (tricycle), a little girl flagged us down. She looked at the driver and said:
​“Keke driver, good morning.”
​He replied: “Good morning, how are you?”
​She said: “Alhamdulillah (Praise be to God).”
​He asked: “Where are you going?”
​She said: “School gate. Will you take me? How much is the fare?”
​He told her: “₦300.”
​She went silent as if she wasn't going to say anything. Then I saw her bow her head, her eyes turned red as if she was about to cry. She then said:
​“Keke driver, I have a hundred naira. Will you take me?”
​He replied: “No, honestly I won't take you unless you give me ₦300.”
​So she said: “Alright then, just go. Even if you take me, I don't know who will bring me back. Besides, this hundred naira is all my mother gave me.”
​And she had already told her: “They won't take me.”
She said: “I should just be patient and go, she has no money.”
“That I should rely on Allah. Good people never run out. There are lovers of the Messenger of Allah. If one person doesn't take me, another will.”
​Then the driver said: “Alright then, keep your hundred naira, I've waived it for you, get in let's go.”
​After we took off, I looked at her and asked:
​“Is your father alive or passed away?”
​She said: “Her father is a soldier. When he leaves, he stays away for a very long time before returning.”
​I asked her again:
​“Who gives you motorcycle/transport fare every day when you come to school?”
​She said: “It's her father who sends them money at the end of every month. After they buy foodstuffs, the remaining money is given to her for school.”
​Again, I asked her:
​“So has the money run out now, or what happened?”
​She said:
​“Well, her mother fell ill and was taken to the hospital. She was given IV fluids and a blood transfusion. They called her father and informed him, but he swore he had no money because it was mid-month.”
​“So they had to sell the foodstuffs they bought, combined it with her school transportation money, and paid for the medication. Even today, she came to school on just pap (koko).”
​I kept asking her questions with so much sympathy I almost cried 🥲 and I asked:
​“Do you attend Islamic school (Islamiyya)?”
​She said: “Yes. In Kano she used to attend Islamic school, but ever since they moved to Abuja she hasn't been enrolled. However, her mother teaches her Quran recitation at home every day.”
​Every question I asked her, I was amazed to hear her answer with such clarity and maturity. I was genuinely surprised to see a young girl like her possessing so much knowledge and intelligence.
​When we arrived at the school gate, I had ₦1,500 in my pocket. Deducting the ₦500 for my Keke fare, I pulled out ₦1,000 to give to her.
​After she stepped down and was about to leave, the driver said to me, “I heard everything you two were talking about, so keep your ₦1,000.” The man then called her back.
​He pulled out ₦7,000, handed it to her, and said:
​“Hide this well so it doesn't get lost. When you get home, give it to your mother. Tell her to buy food stuff for ₦5,000, and keep ₦2,000 aside to give you for Keke fare until your father receives his salary. When you get home, tell your mother that a lover of the Messenger of Allah gave it to you.”
​Then he pulled out another ₦500, gave it to her, and said:
​“Hold onto this and add it to the hundred naira you have. Buy breakfast with ₦300, and save ₦300 to pay for a Keke back home when school dismisses.”
​After the girl left, I looked at the man and asked, “Bro, are you a soldier too, or perhaps a civil servant?”
​He looked at me, smiled, and said, “No, neither, I sell foodstuffs and I'm actually heading to the market right now.”
​He said everything he did for her was for the sake of Allah, just as her mother had taught her. Furthermore, seeing how dedicated and knowledgeable the little girl was regarding Islam inspired him to give her the money.
​May Allah increase our love for the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
