I spent the first day of the Bengali New Year, Poila Boishakh, in the most meaningful way possible, among the people, walking with them, sharing their smiles and their strength. This is where I draw my purpose from. Since taking office in 2011, my singular commitment has been to serve my mothers, brothers, and sisters of Bengal, to ensure that their aspirations are heard, respected, and fulfilled. That is the promise I have lived by every single day.

But today, it pains me deeply to see the suffering and humiliation being inflicted upon them by Bangla-Birodhi BJP. Their existence is being questioned, their constitutional rights are under threat, and in BJP-ruled states, people are being tortured and tormented. They want to impose uniformity by erasing our language, our culture, our food habits, and our diversity. They believe Bengal can be controlled from Delhi and Gujarat. They are mistaken. Bengal will never bow.

It is our collective duty to ensure that Bengal remains in the hands of those who respect our Maa, protect our Mati, and stand with our Manush. I appeal to each one of you to place your trust in us once again. Support our candidates, Mosaraf Hussain from Itahar, Md. Pakistan’s Defence Minister has openly threatened to strike Kolkata. And what has @narendramodi said? Nothing.

Yesterday in Cooch Behar, the Prime Minister addressed a rally but didn’t utter a single word about this grave threat to a major Indian city and its people.

Is this how little the lives of Bengalis mean to him and his Home Minister? Do we not count as a state of the Indian Union? Do the lives of our people not matter at all?

Or is Bengal only useful for milking votes during elections and then left completely abandoned when it faces danger of external aggression?

Purba Bardhaman and Nadia have delivered their answer today. Those who seek to defile this sacred land will be uprooted. The people stand firmly on the side of development, and they will deliver a fitting reply to every slander, every conspiracy, every act of sabotage orchestrated by outsiders.

After their humiliating defeat in 2021, they retaliated not with political vendetta, unlawfully withholding funds under MGNREGA, Awas Yojana, Gram Sadak Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, and other entitlements that are the rightful due of the people of Bengal. And now, they dare to threaten the discontinuation of Lakshmir Bhandar. So long as the Maa-Mati-Manush Sarkar stands, Lakshmir Bhandar will not be touched. Not today. Not ever.

Today, at Banga Bhawan in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri, I met victims of the deeply flawed SIR process, families who have lost loved ones and citizens who, despite being alive, have been falsely marked “dead” and erased from the electoral rolls. Their testimonies were heartbreaking. In a democracy, to inflict such suffering on the people, is not just tragic, it is unconscionable.

Women, senior citizens, migrant workers, daily wage earners, patients, entire lives have been thrown into chaos by this reckless and inhumane exercise. What is even more alarming is that, without any statutory authority and in violation of the Representation of the People Act, an unprecedented number of micro-observers have been deployed in Bengal to usurp the powers of EROs and AROs. Rules are being rewritten mid-process, technologies misused, and procedures weaponised, all to selectively target Bengal and its people.

The BJP has failed to win the trust of the people. It has failed politically. And so it has chosen to hijack a constitutional institution to do what it cannot achieve democratically. But their conspiracies will only strengthen our resolve. We will fight this assault on democracy with every constitutional means at our disposal. We will fight to protect every citizen’s right to vote, to defend Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Constitution, and to uphold the sanctity of free and fair elections.
