@USEmbassyAddis Peace cannot be achieved unless the guilty party (TPLF) receives the appropriate punishment for its offenses. Instead of saying 'both sides,' the United States must explicitly call-out the guilty party and stop the war once and for all.
Freedom of the Press in Ethiopia
In a recent interview with Salome Mulugeta on Africa World TV, American journalist Jemal Countess highlighted the growing persecution of Ethiopian journalists, particularly those of Amhara ethnic background. Ethiopia ranks among the worst countries for press freedom. According to the 2024 World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), it is one of Africa’s top jailers of journalists, with independent media facing constant intimidation, detention, and censorship.
The irony is stark: the very channel that aired this interview, Africa World TV, is itself a victim of YouTube’s unexplained de-platforming. Its reports on atrocities in Ethiopia, especially involving the Amhara population, were taken down without clear justification. Like many others, Africa World TV was penalized for exposing state-led violence under the pretext of violating YouTube’s community guidelines. The affected outlets allege these removals are part of a coordinated digital campaign, led by the Ethiopian government and its international digital arm, to suppress critical reporting and maintain a global media blackout.
Meanwhile, Western institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund continue providing billions in financial arrangements. through loans or aid, to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government. This raises troubling questions: how can nations that champion democratic values justify supporting a regime that silences journalists, censors dissent, and targets entire communities?
The American Ethiopian Public Affairs Committee (AEPAC) continues to monitor this dire situation and is committed to keeping U.S. policymakers and the public informed. In line with the U.S. administration’s foreign policy, which demands accountability for American taxpayer dollars, AEPAC urges the United States, other than providing food and medical support to the drought-stricken and suffering populations in the war-torn regions of Ethiopia, to halt all other financial arrangements with a regime that persecute journalists, silence dissent, and destabilize key regions. American resources should never support governments that violate human rights and threaten U.S. strategic interests. It is time to hold the Ethiopian government accountable and ensure every dollar advances freedom, transparency, and the rule of law.

It’s baffling that the IMF is now citing “security” concerns as one of the reasons the ‘reform’ will not succeed. Didn’t they know they were financing a war economy presided over by a delusional madman ?
Why does Doctors Without Borders (MSF) still have nothing to say about how its staff and those with UN operations faced regular beatings, intimidation, and threats from Tigrayan forces during the TPLF war?
