The American Dream in The Golden Age

The United States now stands at a moment of choice. It can allow the incentives that weakened the connection between effort and opportunity to continue, or it can deliberately realign the ideology of the American Dream that once made widespread prosperity possible.

For much of American history, that path was clear. The American Dream was not simply a story told from one generation to the next. It was a framework built into the structure of the nation itself. The belief that effort, discipline, and productive work, “The Pursuit,” would lead to progress and opportunity and prosperity.

Today, however, many people sense a growing disconnect between that expectation and their lived experience. Public rhetoric, such as President Trump’s remarks, “the golden age of America begins right now”, Jan 20,2025, still speaks of prosperity and opportunity, yet the outcomes experienced by many families tell a more complicated story.
