The Supreme Court has reportedly directed the Tamil Nadu government to identify land for Navodaya schools in every district within three months, in a case that has brought the state’s long-standing two-language policy and resistance to Hindi back into the spotlight.

I have always respected Tamilians.

They are the only people who had some balls to stand their ground and say, WE WANT ONLY TWO LANGUAGES.

They did not simply surrender to pressure.

And I will say this openly after 1936, we Odias became pussy.

From 1947 onwards, I can say this with 100% confidence, Odia survived in large part because Tamil Nadu and the Tamil people refused to simply accept Hindi hegemony.

The way Tamilians agitated.
The way they defended Tamil.
The way their governments stood their ground.
The way ordinary people responded.

That resistance gave other Indian languages breathing space.

That is why Tamilians have my highest order of respect.

Even today, look at the way Tamil Nadu protects its linguistic identity. Government and people often speak with a remarkably united voice on the language question.

Now look at us Odias.

Where is our unity?

We are scattered.

We fight among ourselves.

We claim our own dialects as separate identities and sometimes even treat them as separate languages instead of strengthening the larger Odia linguistic identity.

We don't have a unified voice.

Our governments become suckers to Modi and his politics, while many of our own people are themselves suckers to Hindi.

We respect Hindi more than Odia.

We happily switch to Hindi even when speaking Odia should be completely natural.

We Odias need to ask ourselves a very uncomfortable question

If Tamilians could protect Tamil for decades despite enormous political and cultural pressure, why the hell can't we protect Odia?

Tamilians protected Tamil.
Who will protect Odia?
