Message I sent to my kids and nephews this morning:

I don't know if this news registered with you all, but something extraordinary took place yesterday.

A private Indian company, Skyroot Aerospace, with an average age of 28, launched India's first private rocket into space and placed 2 satellites into orbit.

And this is just 6 years after the government opened up India's space sector for private participation.

Among all the things that you young folks discuss, I hope that you and your friends are discussing this.

In addition, Agnikul Cosmos is getting ready to launch its reusable rockets, an Indian company is making its own small jet engines, and India launched a Hydrogen-fueled train.

Her name was Vijayalakshmi Ramanan.

She was born on February 27, 1924, in Madras. Her father was a World War I veteran and public health official. At 15 years old, she was already an A-Grade artist with All India Radio, performing Carnatic music live on national broadcasts.

She enrolled at Madras Medical College and graduated as its best outgoing student in 1948. She went on to specialise in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

In 1955, her husband, a Wing Commander in the Indian Air Force, brought home an application form and encouraged her to apply.

She did.

She was commissioned into the Indian Army Medical Corps and immediately seconded to the Indian Air Force.

There was no uniform for women in the IAF. None had ever served before. She designed one herself: a blue sari in Air Force colours paired with a tan blouse.

That uniform later became the standard issue for every woman officer in the Indian Air Force.

She was the first woman ever commissioned as an officer in the Indian Air Force.

She served through three wars: 1962 against China, 1965 against Pakistan, and 1971 against Pakistan again. She treated injured soldiers and ran military hospitals through all three conflicts.

Her husband died in 1971. She raised her two children alone while continuing her military duties without interruption.

She retired as Wing Commander in 1979. She then set up a private clinic in Bengaluru and treated patients free of charge well into her eighties.

In 1977, she was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal for distinguished service of a high order.

She died on October 18, 2020.

She was 96 years old.

Every woman officer in the Indian Air Force who came after her wore a version of the uniform she designed for herself.

I am going to write something personal here. Not because I am chasing engagement, but because maybe this reaches someone who thinks their life has ended because of a number on a marksheet.

I scored 49 percent in my 12th.😂
Yes, that kind of number that makes relatives go quiet, neighbors suddenly interested, and well wishers turn into philosophers overnight.

I ended up doing a BSc, the kind of course people treat like a backup plan.

There were reasons. There always are. But I am not here to explain those.

I am here to look you straight in the eye, students and parents alike, and say this. A child’s life does not peak at 17. They have an entire lifetime ahead of them. They will stumble, recalibrate, change direction, and figure things out in ways no one can plan for them.

I figured it out. Today I work in a niche field. I am doing well. I earn more than enough to run a home and even buy some whimsies, I work with global clients, and I am trusted with work that actually matters.

This is not me bragging . This is me providing evidence.

A low percentage in 12th is not the end of the road. It is not even a proper beginning. It is just one data point in a very long story.

I grew at my own pace. Others will grow at theirs. And if you let them breathe, truly breathe, they might surpass everything you thought was possible.

So maybe instead of pushing harder, we pause a little. Just put your hand on his/her back and laugh with them.
Because sometimes all someone needs to succeed is the space to catch their breath.

For many of us who grew up in the 80s/90s… on screen Ram is Arun Govil, Sita is Deepika Chikhalia, Hanuman is Dara Singh& Ravan is Arvind Trivedi.
We are fine with arrows that take their own sweet time… flying, pausing mid air, acknowledging each other… before dramatically colliding.
So don’t mind us if we are not quite sold on hyper CGI versions of Ram, Hanuman & Ravan.

One thing people should understand is their interests/passions may not necessarily be things that they are good at. For eg., I am very interested in mathematics and very passionate about cricket. But i would have never made it in both fields. I am very passionate about music and I am good at it too (though here again i would not have made it professionally i guess). Just because you are passionate about something doesn’t mean you are good at it. If you achieve this clarity at 18-19 you will figure out a path for yourself. Never go down the rabbit hole of passion and end up being miserable.
