In The Literacy 50, we remind ourselves of a hard truth: there’s no evidence for differentiating instruction based on text levels. Small groups aren’t about meeting with everyone. Instead, meet the needs that show up. 💪

Also, an MTSS goal needs to focus on the students deficit. Their goal should not be a program it should be a tool to help with the deficit. Keeping in mind that 70% (or higher) of students deficits are phonics related. Grouping students by skill rather than reading level is key.
We sometimes overcomplicate MTSS, but at its core, it’s about giving students what they need, when they need it.
MTSS isn’t a rigid system. It moves WITH students.
Different paths, same high expectations.
Differentiate the journey, not the outcome.
