Durham Regional Police Association Responds to Conclusion of Independent Criminal Investigation into Oshawa Courthouse Arrest WHITBY, ON — August 5, 2026.

The Durham Regional Police Association (DRPA) acknowledges the completion of the independent criminal investigation conducted by York Regional Police into the January 23, 2026 arrest of defence lawyer Sudine Riley at the Oshawa courthouse. That investigation, which included a review of video evidence, audio recordings, and independent witness statements, concluded that there were no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against any of the officers involved, including PC Lyndon Greene. The DRPA maintains that the arrest of Ms. Riley was a lawful, justified, and appropriate response to her own conduct that day. Ms. Riley was found in the common area of the court house after hours and refused to identify when asked. Furthermore, she failed to leave when requested upon failing to identify, and was consequently arrested. Justice system participants – lawyers and police – are accountable for their actions. Accountability goes both ways. Ms. Riley’s matter remains before the court, and the DRPA is confident the evidence will speak for itself. The DRPA stands firmly behind PC Greene and all members involved in this incident, and thanks them for their professionalism throughout this process. The DRPA will continue to cooperate fully with the ongoing procedural reviews and any related oversight processes.
