A different perspective on the lunatic asylums that existed within British India, @rachel__spero talks about the idea of 'lunatic labour', a form of medical treatment that ultimately supported the economic growth of the British Raj #DHEdinb#themedicalother
Really enjoyed completing our digital project which, through corpus analysis, focuses on the rendering of both mental health and female perspectives in the Medical History of British India archive. Couldn't have worked with a better team of people! #DHEdinb#themedicalother
created a digital map about the history of quarantining in British India for our #DHEdinb class! really enjoyed the learning process :) https://t.co/2F3vhZWQr3
Rhody delineates the value of applying feminist theory & methodology to the text mining of 'big data' w its masculinised rhetoric of scale -a potentially corrective force, this approach could expose androcentric biases & the values embedded in an algorithm's formal logic #DHEdinb

@AelangD @lmrhody I think the value of this is its creation of productive discomfort, as Rhody challenges & defamiliarises traditional modes of knowledge production through her dataset. This allows us to ask different questions, which in turn changes the nature of scholarly discussion itself
@AelangD @lmrhody By exposing the choices that influence the construction of textual corpora & the disparate disciplinary values embedded within text analysis projects, we can have a more self-conscious awareness of the q's we have perhaps been permitted from asking/answering in the past #DHEdinb
@_lydiaay @sramsay_unl you address a prevalent fear within the humanities. to reconcile the two, i think we need to embrace digital objects in humanistic discussions, with faith that the ethical & pedological commitments of humanistic discourse will not necessarily become lost.
@_lydiaay @sramsay_unl i also think unsettling the cultural valuing of empirical data over humanistic discussion can open up productive spaces. this combination of quantitative & qualitative methods could perhaps give us leverage to certain questions or problems #DHEdinb
rly interesting summary by @linmiao_m considering the extent to which DH embraces utopian ideals & the potential positive and negative effects of this. DH is an expanded field & provides a 'hopeful horizon' - would it be productive to curtail its high-reaching aims? #DHEdinb
a highly thought provoking piece by @TaraMcPherson as she asks the v pertinent question, 'why are the digital humanities so white?' & considers how the computational culture of the 1960s has affected the shape of our discussions on race, marking a shift to covert racism #DHEdinb
