“BC Salmon Farmers contribute more than a billion dollars to the BC economy and are vital in small remote coastal communities with positive impacts that ripple to urban BC. BC Salmon Farmers could generate $2.5 Billion in output, 930 Million in GDP and 9000 jobs paying 560 million in wages by 2030 and $4.2 Billion in output by 2040, providing sustainable local protein while protecting wild salmon using innovative technologies and practices.” - Brian Kingzett, Executive Director, British Columbia Salmon Farmers Association (BCSFA)
Don't forget, folks, the person who funds many of the anti-net pen efforts to destroy the livelihoods of thousands of hard-working British Columbian families is someone so shielded by wealth that he will never feel the consequences of his advocacy.

Canada’s federal government is killing off BC’s successful and safe-to-wild-fish salmon farm industry at a cost of $9 billion, agreeing with anti-farm activists who insist it’s feasible to raise these large fish on land. Markets (yet again) beg to differ. https://t.co/GGcHU3vHjb
The myth is no farms = no lice. Broughton 2024 first year with no farms. 3rd highest infestation on juvenile wild salmon in 20 years @alex4salmon @GlobalBC@CHEK_News@globeandmail
Federal politicians, eager for the activist vote, have taken to parroting the alarmist rhetoric of the anti-fish farming lobby, without data to back their assertions.

Latest data shows that sea lice numbers on wild Pacific salmon in the Broughton Archipelago didn't change in 2024 after salmon farms were removed. Real science looks at the real impacts to wild salmon, including climate change, fishery management and river habitat damage.
Years of continuous data collection near salmon farms show a pattern of exaggeration by anti-fish farming activists.

And "Wild First" said yesterday that fish farms require "First Nations independent oversight and monitoring"
That's exactly what all of the fish farms in BC have right now!
Much has been said recently about the relationship between sea lice and salmon farms.
The CSAS Science Response on sea lice indicated that there is no statistical correlation between sea lice counts on wild and farmed populations of salmon – meaning that the presence of farmed salmon does not appear to have a measurable impact of sea lice counts on wild salmon populations.
Additionally, a study published in July which reviewed the Norwegian regulatory management of the salmon farming sector, also concluded that sea lice infections on farms are not associated with a measurable impact on wild salmon.
AND, newly released 2024 data from the Broughton Archipelago wild juvenile salmonoid monitoring program further supports that salmon farms do not impact sea lice levels on wild salmon, as the variability in the percentage of sea lice on wild Pacific salmon remains unchanged despite the removal of salmon farms in the area.

No science. Let's go intuitive: So, a net pen occupies a miniscule area of the entire intercoastal waterway. Net pens are less than 3% fish to water. Any disease comes originally from the wild fish. How are they a significant danger to wild salmon again? Activists make up absurd images to fear monger. #aquaculture #salmon

@LanceStewardson This entire story surrounding salmon farms in BC is straight out of Bizzaro. It's hard to imagine a scenario where governments and activists worked harder to deliver a negative outcome for citizens and the environment.
Unilateral federal Liberal decisions to shut down BC #salmonfarming in response to extremist activist rhetoric underlines this point. Only the most ideological and blinkered are unable to admit this. This action is one glaring example of the plight of Canada's food supply system.
@glen_mcgregor Unrealistic Liberal plan for #salmonfarming drives up food prices , foreign salmon imports and carbon footprint while cutting 1000’s of Canadian jobs, undermining reconciliation and doing nothing for wild salmon. #outoftouch
