Today I'm open sourcing Qivam (https://t.co/OSdVaP4tg5) 🎉. I built this so Muslim developers don't have to solve the same infrastructure problems from scratch. It's the kind of backend that every Islamic app needs but nobody wants to build twice.

Qivam for now have masjid and prayer time related APIs, served through a clean REST API. The bones are strong and the roadmap is ambitious.

Still early days — this is a work in progress and I wouldn't rely on it in production just yet. But I'm building it in public and I wanted to put it out there from the start.

In the past months I've been on a mission to make Pakistan's public data more useable through building open source databases and visualisations.

Today I'm launching Adaad (اعداد), a monthly data journal on Pakistan. Adaad is where those datasets become arguments and insights.

Everything here is made to be taken. The prose, the charts and the cleaned datasets are published under a Creative Commons licence (CC BY 4.0). Translate a piece for an Urdu newspaper. Rebuild a chart for a classroom. Rerun the analysis and publish your disagreement. All we ask is a line of credit and a link to the source.

Adaad also publishes contributors. If you have a question the data can answer — or data that raises a question — pitch it to [email protected]. For more details on what is required for a pitch, please see the about section.

If @HasanT1996 is ok with it I would like to achieve something similar for Qivam so we can start having proper mosque data and its prayer times @AbuKhadeejah your WhatsApp bot might help us here where we don’t need a web frontend for mosque management instead if we can use WhatsApp to control mosque data

Agreed on the point that we need better governance in this part so that someone intentionally doesn’t updates the prayer times with wrong timings (bad actor)

We need to have sort of verification or checking system that allows community to update timings but also give the platform sense of security that someone updating the time is doing legitimately and not just messing around

@Boby853059 let’s suppose I do use Mawaqit then the data is owned and managed by Mawaqit and if another dev wants to build something on top of a prayer time let’s say a better notification or alert system

They either have to go to Mawaqit to update their app for this feature or expose their API so at least we can build a better frontend on top of it

Now as per my knowledge Mawaqit doesn’t support any of these options so that’s why it leaves the consumers or users with only one option in market and that is not what we want

No argue their that Mawaqit has done lots of good and are already doing a lot but with the growth of Muslim devs shipping stuff having access to data and API is the way forward imo

@Boby853059 @HasanT1996 @mawaqit Using Mawaqit has its downside which is that there is no public APIs available. Everything is managed and done on Mawaqit platform itself.

Thats why I’m thinking of building a free open source mosque management system for mosques that they can use

Loaded a few hundred UK mosques into Qivam and started testing.

Found the gap immediately: prayer time accuracy depends on mosque-specific offsets and calculation methods. Qivam's engine is accurate. But it doesn't know your mosque's specific preferences unless you tell it.

This is why we need mosque management built into the infrastructure. Each mosque owns and maintains their data accuracy.

The whole idea behind Qivam is that you don't rely on black-box or closed source APIs, or have to integrate fragmented sources.

Yes, you can self-host. That's the point. Fork the repo, run it yourself, audit everything, own the data completely.

But most developers won't because it's overhead. So I've built an SDK for easy integration, with full type safety.

Either way, you're not locked in. The code is open. The infrastructure is yours. That's what breaks the closed-ecosystem cycle.

Iqamah is different where it relies totally on the community to update its prayer times and not just mosque

@HasanT1996 correct me if I’m wrong
