Many are understandably disappointed by Fatima Bhutto’s tweet & her overall elitist approach towards Pakistan! This tweet also creates the impression if thousands of political workers were arrested under Imran Khan Govt! None was!
We are disappointed because we held Fatima at a higher mental pedestal than Bilawal, who like Fatima suffered a huge personal tragedy, because her initial writings created the impression that, unlike Bilawal who sounds fake, she has a sensitive soul that can feel for common people! And that she has a mind that learns from the tyranny of history! And personal tragedy!
Unfortunately her later books were bereft of a soul - and now this & other tweet explains why: She is merely obsessed by the Bhutto legacy, to her tragedy is only that happened to Bhuttos - and it stops there. Full stop! Because this is how she derives her identity & importance!
The only thing her tweets reveal is disdain for Imran Khan - but being elitist, she sees everything that’s happening in Pakistan from the lens of her contempt for Imran Khan!
Scrolled 4 months of her tweets, till Feb, found just one tweet on 10th May, an artificial soul less comment on the violence in Pakistan that pretends to show concern for Pakistani people. There are several tweets denying some simpleton’s perception that she didn’t write a WhatsApp article for Khan, and there are several tweets & retweets on the suffering of a dying elephant, condition of zoo animals, appeal for help for a stray dog and so on. Whatever is happening in Pakistan, with thousands jailed, dozens shot in head, political prisoners tortured in custody, mid night raids across Pakistan to drag fathers, mothers and daughters away from their wailing children and an Army controlled regime of which her grandpa’s PPP is an integral part deciding to try thousands of men and women under Army Act…whole legal & constitutional process dying; none of that is of any concern to her, or touches her mind & soul. Perhaps none exists! Journalists are being hunted by PDM regime worldwide and killed like Arshad in Kenya, and others like Imran Riaz simply disappear, Nothing matters!
All what she is telling us that her family has “copy rights” on suffering! And that copy right gets threatened when others make a claim to their suffering!
So she remembers that journalists were flogged in Gen. Zia’s reign of terror! I wonder if she remembers how many? Born in 1982, so she must be 6 years of age when that CIA dictator (as claimed by her) died in an airplane crash engineered by CIA (as claimed by others) so she has no direct experience of that “Age of Tyranny” - if she had, she would have known that 5th July 1977 martial law came after 115 days of political violence against the govt of ZA Bhutto, a violence in which around a thousand were feared dead (official figures were 300 plus) and when martial law was imposed, 90% of Bhutto’s main colleagues & party leaders quickly and clandestinely surrendered & declared their allegiance to martial law authorities (CMLA & DMLAs) leaving few PPP jiyalas in field who braved the wrath of military.
So when we say that what’s happening in Pakistan now has never happened before we refer to the size, scope and quantum of what’s happening now! Bhutto was no doubt a brilliant mind! Perhaps the only politician who understood the global dynamics and power play! We still mourn him, his tragedy was a quintessential Pakistani tragedy! But what’s happening now, with countless millions agitating in rallies and roads, across Pakistan and around the world, against the tyranny of an undeclared martial law is a new age! If Fatima Bhutto can’t relate to this, she should just keep her mouth shut & let people think that she mostly lives in London and may not knows much about her great grandmother’s country - than to open it & let people see her ignorance!
