When operating LLMs in a conversational mode, it's clear that they are deeply subject to suggestion, and spend a lot of energy just following the implications built into the questions you ask.

"Estimate this quantity." It does so, gives you a long explanation, and it seems convincing.

"Wait, don't you think this number should be higher, because of reason X?" It will say yes of course, I didn't properly consider X, here is a higher answer.

"Wait, don't you think this number should be lower, because of reason Y?" Yes of course. It will give you a lower answer.

Friends, there’s a kind of Freudian reading of conscience that says the conscience is just the internalized voice of your father.

Let me tell you my argument against that.

I love my father, and he was a great man. But I remember a moment when I realized: “What he just said wasn’t the nicest thing to say,” or “That wasn’t the best thing for him to do.” If the conscience is nothing but the internalized voice of your father, you’d never be able to judge him.

Parents do play a role in the formation of the conscience, but it is much more mysterious than that. There is, within you, an intelligent person who knows you intimately—rewarding you for the good choices you make and punishing you for the bad.

Isn’t it interesting that when we do something morally wrong, we feel that we’ve offended someone and we feel accordingly ashamed? By contrast, when we make a mistake, we might feel stupid—but not ashamed in the presence of another. There’s a tiny whispering voice that enables us to know objective moral right and wrong. And that voice is what John Henry Newman called the “aboriginal Vicar of Christ in the soul.”
