I don’t know who needs to hear this, but after Lindsay was instructed to double her Zoloft dose, she went 48 hours without sleep and freaked out. That was clear “activation” and her prescriber identified it as such yet still leveraged it into a bipolar diagnosis. And more drugs. Despite a negative bipolar screen and no history of mania.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but Lindsay also couldn’t tolerate Prozac. When she said Seroquel made her depressed and numb, her psychiatrist said she was “over-attributing” symptoms to medication.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but Lindsay was prescribed roughly 13 psychiatric drugs in four months with no coherent deprescribing plan. Eight days before the killings, she started amitriptyline; the day before, she was told to double it.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but nobody established that Lindsay had a serotonin deficiency because psychiatry has no validated clinical test for low brain serotonin. A 2022 umbrella review found no convincing evidence that depression is caused by low serotonin. The “chemical imbalance” story was always marketing presented as settled science.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but SSRIs block the serotonin transporter, SERT, and their dose-occupancy curve is hyperbolic. Tiny doses can still occupy a substantial share of transporters, making a conventional final drop to zero potentially the largest biological change of the taper. Neuroadaptation can begin within weeks. Even short exposure can warrant a hyperbolic taper, especially after a bad reaction.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but genetic differences can materially alter how these drugs are metabolized. Lindsay received no pharmacogenetic testing. Such testing is rare.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but FDA antidepressant labeling warns about abrupt agitation, hostility, aggressiveness, impulsivity, akathisia, hypomania and mania, especially when treatment begins or doses change.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but Lilly excluded 76 of 97 reported suicidality cases from one fluoxetine analysis. A Lilly Germany employee objected to instructions to recode “suicide attempt” as “overdose” and “suicidal ideation” as “depression.”

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but premeditation does not disqualify psychosis. A psychotic person can carry out an organized plan while reasoning from a delusional premise. That’s basic psychiatry.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but a federal civil jury found Paxil caused Donald Schell to kill his family and himself. And a judge found that David Hawkins would not have killed his wife but for Zoloft.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but this also happened to William Forsyth, David Carmichael, Shane Clancy, Neal Jacobson and Peter Miles. Each case involved recent antidepressant or psychiatric-drug exposure followed by horrific, profoundly uncharacteristic violence.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but “most people who take Zoloft do not murder their children” is obvious. “Zoloft cannot contribute to lethal violence in a susceptible person” is a very different claim.

You can condemn Lindsay Clancy without granting psychiatry immunity. Your little slogan does not explain what happened to her, and it doesn’t prove the drugs were irrelevant.

I think Lindsay Clancy is actually a great litmus test because men who can't simultaneously understand "the crime was horrific AND women are systemically ignored and abused by doctors" need to be avoided.

Any man who can't understand that won't actually be there for a woman.

A) They didn’t watch the trial.
B) They got their entire understanding of the trial from online talking heads who also didn’t watch the trial.

Here’s what bothers me about the online discourse surrounding Lindsay Clancy, particularly from a very loud contingent of men on this app.

It’s the selective moral outrage.

Cora, Dawson and Callan Clancy were killed by their mother. This is obviously horrific. Trying to understand why does not excuse their deaths or diminish their lives.

Understanding is not excusing. Empathy is not endorsement.

Yet I’ve watched men who’ve never shown the slightest interest in these issues suddenly become incandescent over this case.

EXECUTE HER. DEMON. MONSTER. BABY KILLER.

And increasingly, it isn’t even about Lindsay anymore. It’s women.

Repeal the 19th. Women shouldn’t vote. Women are irrational. Women are evil.

Anyone who acknowledges psychiatric and legal complexity is accused of “idolising a baby killer.”

Where is this gender-wide fury when men kill?

I’ve been screaming about male violence against women for YEARS. Intimate partner violence. Coercive control. Stalking. Familicide. Women murdered by current or former partners.

Mostly into the abyss.

Male violence is so routine it becomes background noise. Another woman murdered by her partner. Another killed after leaving. Another statistic. Another dead woman.

We condemn the individual man and move along. We don’t extrapolate his crime to his entire sex. Nobody responds to a man murdering his family by demanding men lose their voting rights.

The offender remains an individual.

Yet give certain men a horrific female perpetrator and suddenly womanhood itself is on trial.

I wonder whether Lindsay Clancy has inadvertently become a mirror.

One spectacular act of female violence provides an opportunity to unleash rage at a woman while occupying seemingly unassailable moral territory.

“I’m not a misogynist. I CARE ABOUT THE CHILDREN.”

Their horror may be genuine. So can the misogyny.

When grief over murdered children mutates into demands that millions of women lose their civil rights, we’re no longer discussing justice for those children.

The children become a moral permission slip. Misogyny masquerades as righteousness.

Perhaps there’s displacement happening too.

Confronting endemic male violence requires uncomfortable questions about power, entitlement, socialisation, masculinity and misogyny. Why are women so often killed by men they loved, married, dated or tried to leave?

Lindsay Clancy requires none of that introspection. She provides a clean villain. Better still, a female villain.

Of course women can be violent. Nobody serious disputes that.

Why does exceptional female violence become evidence about WOMEN, while ubiquitous male violence remains evidence about individual violent men?

A mother killing her children violates one of our deepest cultural expectations. She becomes the “monstrous mother”, and suddenly curiosity itself is suspicious.

“Why did this happen?” becomes “Why are you defending her?” Asking about her psychiatric state becomes “Why don’t you care about the children?”

No. Criminal courts distinguish between what someone did and their mental state for a reason. Experts can disagree. A jury can find criminal responsibility. Complexity still matters.

Empathy is not allegiance.

We can feel profound empathy for Cora, Dawson, Callan and Patrick Clancy while still asking: what happened to this woman?

If our only response to incomprehensible human behaviour is MONSTER, we learn nothing.

Monsters require no explanation. Human beings do.

Not everyone who believes Lindsay was criminally responsible is misogynistic. Suggesting otherwise would be equally simplistic.

👉🏻But when one woman’s horrific crime becomes a celebration of stripping rights from women generally, something else has hitched a ride.

Perhaps Lindsay Clancy really does hold up a mirror.

Not one saying “men are worse” but a much more uncomfortable one:
