Many fall into the trap of imagining the past as black and white, a drab history of greys and sepia tones, but the reality was considerably more vibrant and colourful! I have cleaned this Autochrome plate from 1908, entitled "Woman of Bethlehem in ancient costume". It was taken in colour by Jules Gervais-Courtellemont 118 years ago, using an early colour glass-plate process. It isn't colourised.

The Persian word Javānmardī is a code of honour in how a man moves and carries himself.

Generosity without being asked. Forgiveness at the exact moment revenge is available.

With a strange clause: conceal it.

Virtue performed for praise loses something essential.

A famous example in Persian tradition is the great wrestler from the 14th century, Pourya Vali. He is said to have thrown a match he was certain to win after overhearing that his opponent's family would starve otherwise.

Photographed in colour 119 years ago, I have cleaned this rare and remarkable Autochrome portrait of the great French actress Sarah Bernhardt, recreating her role of Cleopatra.
She first appeared as the Egyptian queen in 1890, riviving and touring with the play for many years. This recreation shows her in 1907 at the age of 62.
It was taken using an early colour glass-plate process and isn't colourised.
