The UK has some of the lowest levels of gas storage capacity in Europe at 12 days average or 7.5 peak in winter, compared to Germany at 89 days, France at 103 days and the Netherlands at 123 days. As a country surrounded by gas reserves this is an absolute disgrace.
And this ongoing gas storage crisis leaves the UK exposed to higher prices (due to importing costs) and the risk of shortages this winter. The UK pays Norway a whopping £14 billion a year for gas. The UK imports about 50% of its gas, with Norway as its biggest supplier making up 77% of imports (ONS data).
An Offshore Energies UK report from 2022 predicted the UK importing as much as 80% of oil and gas within a decade.
