Head of Communications, Kenya - UN WFP. Ex @BBCNews @BBCWorldService Correspondent covering Africa | Global Health storyteller | Strategic Comms | Moderator
After 7.5 years with #BBC, I’m starting a new chapter. Thrilled to join @WFP_Kenya as Head of Communications. This isn’t a departure from storytelling, it’s a shift in how and where those stories are told. With a focus on narratives rooted in building resilience. #ChangingLives
What happens when refugees are supported?
🍚 Dependency on food aid reduces
🌾 Self-reliance grows
🍉 Nutritious food becomes more accessible
💸 Incomes increase
This is why WFP and @FAOKenya with support from the @EUinKenya, is helping refugees transition from aid dependency to self-reliance. By establishing water pans and greenhouses for irrigation, communities are empowered to grow crops, farm sustainably, and build resilient livelihoods.

🚨The immediate economic shocks from the Middle East crisis are already showing, but the delayed ones could be even more severe - especially for countries relying heavily on food and fuel imports.
WFP's Mercy Juma explains why and what's at stake ⤵️
The latest food security analysis for Kenya confirms severe levels of acute malnutrition in parts of northern Kenya. Extremely critical acute malnutrition has been identified in parts of Mandera, Marsabit and Turkana.
Across ASAL counties, 3.3 million people are facing crisis levels of food insecurity or worse, alongside
429,000 refugees in Dadaab, Kakuma and Kalobeyei.
🎉 From all of us at @WFP_Kenya, Happy New Year! 🎉
In 2026, we continue listening, showing up, and walking alongside communities in the ASALs, and refugee-hosting areas, not only responding to immediate needs but laying the foundations for longer-term stability and self-reliance.
Here’s to a year of impact, scalable solutions and sustainability!

Yesterday, I witnessed the power of #KenyasDigitalInvestigators.
I set out to identify a cop who shot a bystander in broad daylight.
But I immediately realised, I couldn't. Someone had beaten me to it.

Kero Ya Ufadhili:
Wakimbizi Dadaab na Kakuma wanaishi kwa wasiwasi
Wakimbizi hao hutegemea chakula na fedha kutoka Marekani
Kusitishwa kwa ufadhili wa Marekani kumewaweka njia panda
Chakula kilichotolewa mwaka jana kinaendelea kudidimia
Pesa wanazopewa wakimbizi ili kujikimu pia zimekwisha

In #Kenya, over 700,000 refugees rely on @WFP_Kenya to survive.
But with just 40% of a full food ration available, hunger is deepening and malnutrition is on the rise.
Without urgent funding, the situation will only worsen.
