This made the business of arresting black people very lucrative, thus hundreds of white men were hired by these states as police officers.
Their primary responsibility being to search out and arrest black peoples who were in violation of ‘Black Codes’

Black Historical Tea:
When James Baldwin & Richard Wright Almost Fought (And Tore Up a Parisian Cafe)
In 1949, a young Jimmy Baldwin published a scathing review of Richard Wright's novel "Native Son" in an essay he entitled "Everybody's Protest Novel." When Wright read the essay, he became enraged and decided to physically roll up on Baldwin (in person) at the trendy Parisian Cafe Les Deux Magots--where the two men were frequent patrons. Wright and Baldwin had previously had a friendly mentorship/mentee relationship---Wright was 40, Baldwin was 25.
Baldwin---who had a few drinks--essentially told Wright, "don't come for me, unless I send for you." Wright (who was the reigning OG of black literature at the time) warned Jimmy to stay in his place or the two of them were gonna have a "problem."
That didn't go well.
What happened next is one of the greatest Love & Hip Hop-level brawls in black literary history: Wright started swinging, Jimmy started cussin, tables started flying--and the novelist Chester Himes was the only person strong enough to physically subdue the two men.
In the years to come, James Baldwin would go on to become one of the most important voices in American literature. Richard Wright maintained his status as one of the most influential writers in American history.
But the two men would never speak to each other again.
@sbearbergman Constantly answering hard questions about everything from whether there are ghost spiders to why we can’t start with dessert to what is communism to just plain Why?
@AllEarsNet Easier to get dining reservations and cancel them. Roller coasters more thrilling. Everything seems to be less expensive. The immersive experience at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Volcano Bay better.
Prisoners across Texas are organizing a hunger strike to protest the state’s solitary confinement practices starting tomorrow — the first day of #txlege.
Texas routinely keeps people in solitary for years. 500+ have been in isolation at least a decade.
