Absolutely tragic, but I'm sorry what is wrong with these people? Seems they can't sense the danger at all, not the danger of being on a street at night in the first place, not the danger of the agitated man after he passed them, the danger once he started acting violent, not his increased agitation after they engaged him.
I think the answer is people who think and act like this are fundamentally detached from reality. This is what Wokeism is at core, a post-modern denial of realty. It's what separates the woke from traditional advocates of social justice, they believe changing your view of reality changes reality, yet of course it doesn't. And this dangerous approach to the world impacts not just them, but many others, and worse, even when the effects of their beliefs and policies are clearly disastrous to most people, more wishful thinking prevents them seeing those effects as well.
This kind of delusional thinking impacts everything and at all scales, from interactions on the street to business, to international geopolitics.
