“Our lunchtime had arrived, so all of us players headed to our dining area. Five of the players chose to eat using their own money, so they ordered whatever food they liked.
But we, on the other hand, had to rely on the money provided by the team. Even if we didn’t like the food, we had no other option because we had no money of our own. As the day of our return to Eritrea was getting closer, our teammates who had come from different European countries would ask us to take small gifts back home to their families. That’s where everything began to change for us.
One of them came up to me and started showing me pictures of his family. He lived abroad with them and showed me different happy moments—celebrations, his older brother’s graduation, his younger sister’s birthday—beautiful, joyful memories. ‘This is my mother, this is my younger brother,’ he said, introducing me to his whole family through his phone.
I drifted into my own thoughts, remembering the family I had left behind. 💔 I compared his life with mine—his happiness with his family—and thought about my younger brother, who disappeared after going into the Tigray war. I compared him to the brother in the photos, smiling and embracing his sister, and I said to myself: “Happiness only exists when you are alive.”
He kept showing me more pictures. I even compared his father—dressed well, driving a car—to my own father, whose life was consumed by military service. In that moment, I felt something deep inside me—was it jealousy, or anger? I couldn’t tell.
Then he took out 500 euros from his pocket and asked me to deliver it to his uncle. That moment shook me. Thoughts flooded my mind: How can we both be from the same country, yet live such completely different lives—like heaven and earth? He was sending money to support his family… but what could I possibly bring back to mine?
I told him to keep the money with him for now, saying I needed time to think until the day of departure approached.
Those teammates from different countries, who had other nationalities, didn’t interact much with us. Outside of training and matches, they stayed in their rooms, talking to their families on the phone. But we, the players who came from Eritrea, stayed together. Most of us came from poor families and difficult backgrounds.
That’s why we chose to use this small opportunity—to escape, to grow in this wider world alongside other young people, and to leave behind Eritrea, which felt like a big prison. We didn’t originally plan to escape, but just like our teammates from other countries, we also want happiness. We need money. And we deserve freedom.
Peace to everyone. 🥰”

@SMehary Yup, all my fault! Nothing to do with Isaias' Eritrea being a huge prison camp with no rights, no jobs, no economic opportunities, endless "National" Service, imprisonment with no due process, torture, no internet, no elections, etc. But I guess it's all my fault, not Dictator's
For #Eritrea to truly move forward, we must embrace change rooted in justice and unity. #EBRF is committed to a future where diversity is respected, human rights are protected, and governance is accountable to the people.
We reject systems that silence citizens and divide communities. Instead, we stand for a democratic Eritrea where peace and development go hand in hand.
The time for transformation is now and EBRF is ready to lead it.

Transparency and accountability matter more than ever. Ongoing reports of #Eritrean military involvement in #Tigray continue to raise serious concerns about sovereignty and regional stability.
People across the Horn of Africa deserve peace, safety, and a future built on cooperation, not conflict.
The voices of young people must be heard. They are essential to building lasting change and a more just future.

@BahlibiY Yohannes Abraha aka #FreeJohnBlack & Black Diamond to many is currently detained as a political prisoner in Holland. He stood for justice & democracy against #Eritrean regime's #TransnationalRepression. He birthed #BlueRevolution which makes him PFDJ's nightmare. @UN@BBC@hrw
It's time for action! Even his most loyal supporters have had enough of the dictator's betrayal of our country and people. It really hurts to feel the pain and disappointment of a martyr's son who has had enough of the PFDJ's empty promises. #BlueRevolution #RegimeCahngeInEritrea
