It is the right of the Prophet that we love him and prioritize this love over everything else, this [love] includes obeying what he commanded us with, and avoiding what he prohibited.

It also includes believing in his teachings, and worshiping Allah  only and according to His law. The Prophet said,

"None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to you than your father, your children, and everyone else."

So, it would be considered disrespectful to the Prophet to engage in innovations, such as celebrating his birthday (Mawlid).
