FUN FACT FRIDAY โ๏ธ๐งต
The fugu didnโt start as fashion.
It started as war gear.
Originally worn in Northern Ghana, the garment was known as fugu, a word derived from the Moshi language meaning cloth. Among the Dagomba, it is called bingba.
When the garment entered Asante territory, its identity shifted. It became known as Batakari and its purpose changed.
In the 19th century, Ashanti military forces wore the batakari as battle dress. These were not ordinary robes. Made from cotton and reinforced with leather pouches and metal cases, the batakari carried talismans and spiritual charms believed to make warriors bulletproof.
To the Ashanti army, the batakari was not clothing it was armor, symbolizing strength, protection, and invincibility.
What began as a northern cloth evolved into a military statement, and later into the cultural icon celebrated across Ghana today.
History lives in every stitch.
