Greece has once again proven that it is Saudi Arabia's true ally, and not Turkey

Yesterday, in the early morning hours, a Greek Patriot air-defense battery stationed in Saudi Arabia successfully shot down Iranian drones launched toward Saudi Arabia from Yemen.

Turkey was unable to respond and protect Saudi Arabia within the framework of the "Mecca Agreement." Turkey possesses neither the military leverage nor the capabilities to defend its allies. Greece has once again protected friendly Saudi Arabia. The Mecca Agreement has no operational bearing whatsoever on the war in the Middle East.

If you ask Turkey what “peace” in the Aegean looks like, the answer is stark: it begins with Greece making concessions.

In practice, the Turkish vision of “peace” entails Greek islands left undefended opposite a heavily militarised Turkish coastline and stripped of full territorial waters, so that Turkish warships and jets can operate freely around in what is, by geography and international law, a Greek island sea.

It means Greece accepting a permanently occupied Cyprus and giving up exclusive rights in its own seas. In short, for Turkey, “peace” would mean Greece becoming smaller, weaker, and quieter-while Turkey steadily expands its influence.

At its core, this is not a technical dispute over legal interpretation - it is Turkish irredentism.

❌Turkey simply refuses to recognise where its borders end and Greece’s begin.

This dynamic reveals the true nature of the relationship: not that of a difficult neighbour, but of a revisionist aggressor that still harbours imperial ambitions over territory and waters that do not belong to it.

These borders are not ambiguous, nor are they recent. They were settled in the aftermath of the Treaty of Lausanne, which definitively established the modern boundaries between Greece and Turkey. Under that settlement, Turkey secured full sovereignty over Anatolia, while Greece retained its islands in the Aegean.

Until Turkey demonstrably abandons these claims, respects the sovereignty and integrity of Greek territory, it will always be seen as a security threat that has to be contained.

🔵Greece harbours no desire for war or confrontation. Its position is clear, lawful, and purely defensive: it seeks only to uphold its sovereignty within borders and rights already recognised under international law -nothing more, nothing less.

🔴But that is not enough. Deterrence cannot remain passive or declaratory. It must be decisive and credible. Greek foreign policy has to send an unambiguous message: any violation of its sovereignty will not just be blocked-it will be met with consequences that impose real, strategic loss.
Those who choose escalation must understand that they risk not only failure, but the loss of what they already hold.
This is the only language bullies understand.

​1. Ramstein Air Base, the most important US military hub outside America, is built on German land provided rent-free, with Germany contributing hundreds of millions to its upkeep. The US couldn’t replace it anywhere in the world.

2. Every US military operation in the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia flows through Ramstein. Lose it and US power projection in the Eastern Hemisphere is crippled.

3. The UK provides and maintains RAF Lakenheath used almost entirely by the US Air Force. Italy provides Aviano. Greece provides Souda Bay. Turkey provides Incirlik. European land. European infrastructure. American operations.

4. The US Sixth Fleet depends entirely on European ports for fuel and supplies. Souda Bay, Naples, 11 Greek ports. Without them the Sixth Fleet cannot operate in the Mediterranean or project power into the Middle East.

5. The majority of NATO’s intelligence and surveillance capacity is hosted on European soil and fed directly to the CIA, NSA and Pentagon.

6. Early warning radar at Fylingdales, UK. Missile tracking in Greenland. Norwegian monitoring stations near Russia. All dependent on European goodwill.

7. It would cost America MORE to bring the troops home than keep them here. European hosts subsidise roughly a third of all basing costs.

8. Europe is America’s largest arms customer. Stop buying American and part of their defence industry goes bankrupt.

9. The bases aren’t charity. They’re America using European soil, European money and European goodwill to project power across the world.

Turkey is furious that Greece deployed Patriot anti-missile systems on Karpathos and Limnos.

Let’s be absolutely clear:

🇬🇷 These islands are Greek sovereign territory.
🇪🇺 They are also EU territory.
They are part of NATO’s defensive perimeter.

Greece has every right — and responsibility — to protect its citizens and allied airspace.

What is truly alarming is not Greece deploying defensive systems.
What is alarming is Turkish political figures circulating maps that portray large parts of Greece as “Turkish territory.”

That is not diplomacy.
That is revisionism and intimidation.

Patriot systems are defensive.
They protect against missiles and threats in an increasingly unstable region.

If Turkey respected international law and Greek sovereignty, there would be no reason to complain.

Instead of threatening maps and propaganda, Ankara should remember:

🛡️ Greece is defending EU and NATO airspace.
⚖️ Sovereignty is not negotiable.

Greece will defend its islands, its people, and its allies.

Of a $968bn global defence budget, only $33bn is spent in Europe, mostly on US bases which are not NATO bases.

The actual US funding of NATO is approx $600m a year, about the same as Germany.
