Aside from Venera, and (arguably,) the various competing Soviet space station programs, generally Soviet firsts in spaceflight were rushed for propaganda purposes, and as a result often underperformed.

@bisexualborscht @psvmjohn @Gompers_Stomper They famously were doing exactly that. They barely got the first satellite into orbit first, and did that by scaling back the payload to a beeping ball. The *first* US satellite was already more complex and capable than Sputnik.

This pattern holds for most Soviet space 'firsts'.

@sawyer_spa36976 @psvmjohn @Gompers_Stomper This is a really ironic take, since most of the Soviet 'firsts' were only achieved because they rushed and achieved sub-optimal scientific aims that NASA rapidly tended to surpass.

NASA got to the moon first because the Soviet space program was terribly mismanaged.

@sokol_cc yes, the curvature of the aerofoil is changed by MFC (micro fiber composite) actuators bonded to the inner side of the skin.

The majority of the issues with their content has more to do with how they use their tools.
