It’s been a long day, but have you seen how cute my kids are? I made tiny punks in my own image! I’m gonna back off twitter again now, see you later ✌️
@ifpistemology@crosberg @NoPlaceLikeOh @stephgreyglass @dogunderwater By the time everything dissolved, j was on my way out of comics, only writing for free and moving on from my shop position, and I was in the hospital with my baby. I wasn’t in a place to tell and many stories weren’t mine to relay.& I haven’t been back after being targeted by CG
@ifpistemology@crosberg @NoPlaceLikeOh @stephgreyglass @dogunderwater Yeah, in a better time I look back and probably should have done something more public. I considered leaving the group but instead I moved up, and consulted several people (in & has left the group) and made the decision to stay as an admin and try to make a difference.
My novel's title has changed! ROOT MAGIC is a middle grade Southern Gothic about twins learning rootwork & finding their place in the world. This tale of conjure, family, and monsters is full of #Gullah#Geechee tradition and folklore. Can't wait to share it with y'all!
@crosberg @stephgreyglass @dogunderwater@ifpistemology Okay. I’m really not getting my point across here and I apologize. A lot of changes were attempted, a lot of different issues existed. The group is gone, and for good reason. Better spaces exist.I was trying to clarify a very specific point, and not as an excuse for anything else
@stephgreyglass @dogunderwater@crosberg@ifpistemology I was an admin and I was in the group for years. That’s why Im not in comics anymore. I just popped in to clear some things up for people who don’t deserve to be hurt again.
@crosberg @stephgreyglass @dogunderwater@ifpistemology I’m not trying to argue about anything, just giving a little perspective on how some misconceptions played a part- like it wasn’t a whisper network or activist space, the reality was different and purposely so.
@crosberg @stephgreyglass @dogunderwater@ifpistemology Outspoken people, mostly POC, were silenced and mistreated in conversations. That’s inexcusable. What I’m trying to say is it was mostly just a retail space with an undeserved facade. There’s a lot to unpack, but that’s the basics.
@stephgreyglass @dogunderwater@crosberg@ifpistemology Nah I get where you’re coming from. There was so much privacy that people have a very warped idea about what it was, when realistically it was 99% asking questions about POS systems and catching up on Lumberjanes.
@stephgreyglass @dogunderwater@crosberg@ifpistemology There were comics journalists in the group who were also retailers (like me, long ago) but it was a private space. Most days things ran smoothly, but on days (now would count) when people would want to organize or speak up, that wasn’t an option.
@stephgreyglass @dogunderwater@crosberg@ifpistemology Changes were attempted but ultimately, the entire operation was tied to Kate and her Decisions and veto power. Some people would have liked to do more, some people wanted it to be a “business only” space. Lack of clarity and purpose contributed greatly to many issues.
All I really want to do with my time is make lists of comics kids should read so hire me for that, Kay? I just want to read queer kids books for the rest of time.
I’ve been kind of sleeping on comics for a while after all the Valkyries fallout and being harassed by CG so pardon me for just coming back to blow up. But hey, I’m here now. Maybe I’ll actually start writing about comics again? Who knows 😂
There is no room for failure in these spaces anymore. We need to do better, be better. We need to embrace change and confront inequality. We don’t need to toss out bland, half assed allyship and whine when it doesn’t work out.
Give me a Moon Girl movie, Black Widow is old news.
Now that the Valkyries have been gone for a while... I usually explain it the same way I view the Black Widow movie. Was it good when it started? Yes. Was it something new that helped a lot of women felt supported and seen? Absolutely.
It’s 2020. We are seeing more people than ever come out in outspoken rebuke of abuse in comics. We are seeing stories of discrimination and manipulation that are UNFATHOMABLY UNETHICAL. We don’t need a big group of white girl friends anymore.
