This is one of my favourite Norman Rockwell paintings, and it captures a moment almost everyone lives through: the day you first look in the mirror and wonder if you are enough…

It is called Girl at Mirror, made by Rockwell for the Saturday Evening Post in 1954. A young girl, maybe eleven or twelve, sits on the floor in front of a mirror. A doll lies beside her, tipped over and forgotten. On her lap is an open magazine turned to a photograph of a glamorous grown woman, and the girl looks from the picture to her own reflection, comparing, measuring, wondering. A lipstick and a comb sit within reach. She has been experimenting. She is trying the future on.

Everything is in that small gap between the doll and the magazine: behind her, on the floor, is childhood, the toy she has just set down. In her lap is the future, the woman she is straining to imagine becoming. She is sitting exactly on the line between the two, and Rockwell caught her in the very act of crossing it, the moment a child stops simply being herself and begins to wonder how she will be seen.

There is no vanity on her face, only doubt. She is not admiring herself. She is studying herself, the way we all learn to do and then never quite stop, holding her own reflection against someone else's and coming away unsure. Rockwell always said he painted life as he wished it to be, but here he let himself paint something different: the first ache of self-consciousness settling into a child who, only a moment ago, was still just an innocent child.

You want to kneel down next to her and tell her to wait. You want to tell her she had it right the first time, before the world leaned in and taught her to doubt, back when the mirror was only a thing you made faces in, and the doll on the floor was still the most interesting thing in the room...

A surrogate mother is fighting to save the baby boy she’s carrying.

His life is at stake.

McKenna, a single mother in Alaska, became a surrogate to bring her family extra income and help another family have a baby.

She applied to Worldwide Surrogacy, was matched with a couple, and became pregnant with a baby boy she calls Gabriel. Everything went smoothly at first…

At the 20-week anatomy scan, doctors noticed there was no blood flow through the left side of Gabriel’s heart. A specialist diagnosed him with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS)—a treatable condition.

Shortly after the diagnosis, Gabriel’s intended parents requested McKenna abort him.

McKenna scheduled appointments at abortion facilities out of state.

But she didn’t want to do it…

"Every time I thought about having to show up at the clinic, I was hysterical, and I couldn't picture myself reacting or feeling any other way. So I was really scared of how I would view myself as a woman and a mother, how I'd be able to come home to my kids after participating in something like that.

But I didn't have the means to be sued over this. I'm a single mom. I can't afford lawyers to fight this. I felt I had no other option, no way out. It was just a horrible feeling."

Baby Gabriel would have been killed in a D&E abortion—brutally dismembered with metal forceps, limb from limb.

Thankfully, McKenna’s brother stepped in, promising that he would care for McKenna, her children, and even Gabriel. She cancelled the abortion procedure.

McKenna got in touch with @LilaGraceRose, and was connected with doctors willing to care for Gabriel after birth. But Gabriel’s intended parents have NOT agreed for him to receive ANY treatment.

In fact, they’re suing McKenna for not aborting Gabriel.

This precious child is in danger. McKenna is 35 weeks pregnant, preparing to give birth, and has filed for custody to ensure Gabriel receives treatment.

"I want to fight for him because he deserves that chance…There's no guarantee; there's not a guarantee with anything. But he deserves a chance of living life outside of my womb. I just really pray he gets that opportunity."

McKenna is working with lawyers trying to protect baby Gabriel’s life, but a California court may be able to dictate where she gives birth and which medical team treats her.

McKenna and baby Gabriel are victims of the surrogacy industry—which blatantly treats women and babies as commodities instead of humans.

Baby Gabriel MUST be given his chance at life.

Toyota, preferably a Certified Pre-Owned. Also check the safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety & the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. #IIHS tests better mimic point of impact in real life.
I have a ‘11 Prius with 250k miles on it. Besides regular oil changes, I’ve put a couple of sets of tires on it and 2 brake replacements.
Also, be wary of private sellers as well. They can be crooks too.
