They block access roads outside railway stations, prevent Ola/Uber from picking up passengers and decide who gets to leave the station.

Indians are copying Americans but you should know how bad their consequences have been:

One 2026 poll found more than a third of working Americans are left with $0 at month’s end and nearly 40% with less than $50.

37% will not be able to cover a sudden $400 expense even after maxing out their credit cards.

These are just some top-of-the-surface stats I'm sharing. It's far more terrible – will share in a post some other day.

So don't copy their concepts like "YOLO", i.e., you only live once. Because if you do, their consequences will also be imposed on you.

Live your life, but don't forget to earn before spending.

I have said this many times and I'll repeat it – the retirement problem is going to get really bad in India.

People won't be able to retire and you'll start seeing this problem becoming extremely big within one decade from now.

There was a time when a holiday overseas began the moment you touched down at your destination airport.

The sheer expanse. The travelators. The duty-free stores bursting with an abundance of alcohol, perfumes, dark glasses, watches, scarves and handbags.

We, the perennially starved of plenty, were awestruck.

The holiday mood began right there.

But today, Heathrow, Frankfurt, Charles de Gaulle - they all look jaded compared with our airports. In need of a serious up-grade.

And though I am now satiated by the abundance that duty-free stores offer, the sheer pleasure of seeing it all at our airports remains undiminished.

Perhaps that joy can only be understood by those who once experienced so little.

From Indira Gandhi International to Dubai International, the journey was seamless. A smooth, effortless flow that would have seemed almost unimaginable to us once.

And now, yes, let’s clean up our cities.

It is so doable. It is such low-hanging fruit.

Cleaner streets, better-maintained public spaces, less litter, greater civic discipline. These are not grand, impossible ambitions. They are within our reach.

And the payoff will be far greater than just making us more attractive to visitors.

It will make us feel good about where we live.

And perhaps that is the most important payoff of all.
