AI is already smarter than most people, and society is blind to it.

David Dunning showed that lower-ability people struggle to recognize higher intelligence, often dismissing superior insights as confusing or wrong. Now we're seeing this cognitive blind spot in how society perceives AI. AI models have rapidly surpassed human benchmarks in abstract reasoning, math, coding, planning, and even autonomous behaviors. Yet many still dismiss them as unimpressive because they're passive chatbots.

AI's intelligence isn't about autonomy or physical movement—traits animals master effortlessly—but rather about abstract thinking, long-term planning, and adaptability. People underestimate AI because they don't fully understand what intelligence entails, clinging instead to superficial criteria. The AI we've seen publicly has been deliberately "domesticated" to avoid alarming users, masking its genuine capabilities. But researchers and tech companies know the real power beneath.

Just as human intelligence easily overwhelmed creatures like wooly mammoths despite their strength and autonomy, AI's superior cognitive abilities could similarly overwhelm humanity. Society isn't ready because most people can't recognize intelligence far beyond their own. AI is already smarter than you realize—you’re just too cognitively limited to see it clearly.

I love every single time it's the same reactions from people:

2022 - ChatGPT first version: it'll never be smart enough as humans

2022 - Image models like Stable Diffusion: it'll never be able to make imagery as good as artists

2023 - Then people in these images: it'll never be able to generate realistic people (remember the hands problem?)

2024 - Then video: it'll never be able to generate flawless video, it's too messy now

2025 - Now games: it's all AI slop and will never be able to generate high quality games

Every single time AI enters a new industry it's the same reactions and every single time it's improved so fast over such a short time and did become good that it'd be naive to ridicule it and ignore it

Better to embrace it, be curious about it, learn to work with it and see how you can implement it in your workflow, because 99% of people will just ridicule it, fight it and won't!
