TL:DR - Hi, I'm @TicoraVJones and I wrote as @MicellaPDeWhyse from 2002-2008 https://t.co/1d8t1w4rm6 and here's my "coming out" story https://t.co/pwPeJ6ak5L
#BlackInChem folks- thinking about using your scientific training beyond the lab? It's possible - I wrote about my how I started thinking about transitioning out of the traditional Lab track as @MicellaPDeWhyse here: https://t.co/y7mnzoan7c and will talk about @AAAS_STPF tomorrow
Hey #BlackInChem 👋🏾 I'm also @TicoraVJones a Polymer Science & Eng PhD ('06) and a Mat Science BS ('00) and I wrote about my grad school and Postdoc experiences under this pseudonym https://t.co/8CWkDiYvkl #BlackinChemRollCall@BlackInChem
@IBJIYONGI @DNLee5 I got email from folks trying to find their way through, or those on the other side of the PhD. They replied when I asked questions, I replied when they did. It was social as I could be before blogs and comments and the digital commons.
Still wrapping my head around this #History of Black Scientists in #Outreach, #SciComm, #ScienceOutreach@MicellaPDeWhyse was my way of making sense of the world as an individual - working to find a way to support ongoing work to change the systems
Finding Micella's blog years ago as I made my way through the wilderness of graduate studies as a Black woman gave me support I couldn't have imagined or done without. Thank you for then and now, Micella/Ticora.
Pandemic life has forced me to slow down and think about how I show up in the world - but I haven’t been able to show up fully, because the 7 years of writing that I did (that’s a whole lot of content y’all) isn’t something that I could fully own. 11/x
The open letter I wrote to faculty and administration on how to better support underrepresented minorities (https://t.co/L53JswlfS9) in *2004* is still relevant and often unaddressed. 10/x
#BlackintheIvory snatched me right back to one of my first days of graduate school, when I was asked whether I got into my prominent PWI because of affirmative action. 9/x
Why am I “coming out” now? There’s power in owning and telling our own stories What is clearer to me now, is how much hasn’t changed about the challenges of graduate students of color and the broader challenges in the academy. 8/x
