Building a sense of belonging is an act of leadership. It creates the conditions for people around us to feel supported & valued & to thrive. Even small moments of connection or reflection can have a big impact on people's sense of belonging.
@GeoffCohen, author of "Belonging: The Science of Creating Connection and Bridging Divides", suggests seven ways to build belonging for ourselves & others:
1) Reach out: small actions matter.
2) Don’t underestimate the benefits of connection: even little connections energise us.
3) Don’t be so quick to judge others: we tend to over-blame people (personality/ability/virtues) & under-blame situations & context.
4) Be welcoming at the beginning: we can improve retention by helping new people evoke their best self during the induction process, rather than trying to “break them in.”
5) Give wise criticism: give feedback in a way that helps people learn but isn’t threatening or undermining to their sense of belonging.
6) Share stories of adversity: stories of people who have gone before us help us to see our shared humanity.
7) Listen to other people’s perspectives: ask them questions about what’s standing in the way of their belonging & how we can help.

The psychological safety hierarchy of needs at work by @heidipsychology. I appreciate how Heidi has created three categories. At the base are basic safety needs like not being micromanaged. Next is psychological needs like belonging & sense of esteem. At the top is self-fulfilment needs, the ability to be our true, authentic selves. People who work at the top of their pyramid are the ones with the potential to deliver the best performance.
"...medicine continues to struggle with providing safe environments for its members. Several cultural barriers to psychological safety permit endemic harassment: large power gradients, a weak ethical climate, and enabling structural factors that maintain a toxic culture."
And we treat each other like garbage. The numbers on mistreatment, and the data on how we have cultivated a culture of harm is alarming. @fmsiad and I reviewed these data. Harassment is normalized & we are blind to mistreatment. 7/

"Bring me a solution, not a problem". Some leaders think that when they say this, they're being "empowering". They're actually encouraging sub-optimal solutions, rather than collaborative problem-solving & risking issues being swept under the carpet. There's another way: https://t.co/n5zZoXCCX3. I've been teaching recently on creativity, innovation, design thinking and also on information systems. I like this quote from CompSci legend C.A.R Hoare, and I think his assessment of simplicity vs. complexity has broad applicability outside of software!
I love @SickKidsNews' simple and visual model of #qualityimprovement vs. #patientsafety in healthcare, and it's been on my mind recently as I hear from friends and family about too many distressing care experiences.

Patton was a brilliant tactician but a complicated man. He held problematic views on race and on two occasions he verbally and physically attacked soldiers hospitalized for PTSD. In avoiding #groupthink, we should remember the importance of #psychologicalsafety and #inclusion.
Blaming and shaming doesn't stop people from making mistakes. It stops them from admitting mistakes.
If people can't share their blunders, they can't learn from them—and neither can the rest of us.
The best way to prevent errors is to make it safe for people to discuss them.
Thrilled to be back on campus teaching and sharing insights on a variety of topics with BComm undergrads, MBA students, and continuing education professionals. The @UCalgary Downtown Campus and @HaskayneSchool's new Mathison Hall are lovely places for learning!
Last week the @WHO announced that the theme of World Patient Safety Day 2023 will be "Engaging patients for patient safety", in recognition of the crucial role patients, families and caregivers play in the safety of health care. Read more below⬇️ https://t.co/jliiXcutU8
Happy International Women's Day! Today is an important day to celebrate and acknowledge women's accomplishments and the progress made towards gender equality, but also reflect on the work that still needs to be done.
