Ever since I was a student, when the "School Briefs" series first hooked me into a weekly habit of reading The Economist, I have eagerly waited each year for the Christmas double issue.
There is something special about that extra-thick edition. Beyond the usual geopolitical and economic analysis, it always seems to contain a treasure trove of interesting articles that explore the "hidden corners" of history, science, and culture.
Judging by the cover that just dropped, this year may be no different.
Time to settle in and start reading.

This Biden Speech was the Al Capone vault of 2024. In prime time he promised to explain his withdrawal- then didn’t. Was it due to polls? His health? Pressure from donors? “Passing the torch” is not an explanation.
