@BradWilcoxIFS@WSJ “Dr. Waldinger is director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development, which has tracked two cohorts of men…One of its essential findings, he said, is that having “one or two people who you are securely connected to” is a top component of happiness and health”
@Aileen__sc@robkhenderson I don’t think either of these reflect the reality of what’s going on here, even if some men have unrealistic expectations, it’s much more complicated than men only wanting IG model types
@comn_grnd@LibertyAnders Which isn’t to say they aren’t related problems. Different sides of the same coin perhaps. But there is a reason this content resonates with so many and I think it’s worth investigating
@comn_grnd@LibertyAnders This is a good point. I agree with her that the tone and format of these podcasts is counterproductive, but incels and these folks are nowhere near analogous. Incels and these women have fundamentally different problems/issues when it comes to dating/intimacy/etc…
@The_Prologuist@CostelloWilliam@theyasminbenoit@drjuliashaw I’m not equating incels and disabled folks, but it forces you to consider how a society might go about facilitating sex and intimacy for those who have trouble accessing it, for any reason
@The_Prologuist@CostelloWilliam@theyasminbenoit@drjuliashaw Fair points. I really like this book: https://t.co/5c732PWWBF it looks at how two progressive European countries think about and facilitate sex for disabled folks, raises questions about the extent to which sex and intimacy are necessary for living a meaningful life
@The_Prologuist@CostelloWilliam@theyasminbenoit@drjuliashaw Totally agree that this is a huge problem. Many will respond well people need money or a job but they don’t need sex. But which of these do most humans have a strong, intrinsic drive for?
@LaurenFoxWrites@CostelloWilliam@theyasminbenoit@drjuliashaw And just bc attractiveness is socially constructed, doesn’t mean it has no impact on people’s lives. I’m not saying it’s as consequential as race, but new research from Harvard sociologist @EllisMonk does suggest that it’s pretty consequential: https://t.co/aSb9GBDwhz
@LaurenFoxWrites@CostelloWilliam@theyasminbenoit@drjuliashaw I agree, but it’s not so easy to shrug off cultural pressures. When kids fail in school and feel worthless there are material social consequences, even if they understand meritocracy is a sham. While questioning the norm is important, it doesn’t make failure much less devastating
@LaurenFoxWrites@CostelloWilliam@theyasminbenoit@drjuliashaw Who assumed that? I never said that. In fact I don’t think that would come close to solving anything bc the deep rooted problem is that these people don’t feel like society values them, which would not be solved at all by sex or relationships
@LaurenFoxWrites@CostelloWilliam@theyasminbenoit@drjuliashaw Lol now you’re putting words in my mouth. I never said there was anything natural about our beauty standards, but it’s unnaturalness is of very little comfort to those who live within the confines of social and cultural norms
