@RCCoulombe I spent a week at the Banff International Research Station - built in the style and spirit of Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach in the German Black Forest. Of course the Alberta wilderness is unmatched!
@RCCoulombe@RCCoulombe : we should connect, as we have many interests in common: life in Los Angeles, Vienna, Catholicism, etc. it looks like you are traveling but perhaps a drink when you are back in LA?
@clairlemon I think I know what you mean - not boring in that it is not amusing, but in the sense that he was just a banal pimp, fixer and abuser. Sad, ugly and tragic for the young girls.
@AnthonyEsolen I follow your movie recommendations - mostly older films, and I agree. But last night we watched the relatively new “Count of Monte Cristo” with Jim Caviezel and it is excellent! No snark or annoying irony; clear good and bad; redemption and adventure; love and duty. All clearly delineated and lots of fun!
Bastante flipante!
When I teach algorithms, I teach how to prove correctness, and termination is one part of correctness. It appears that it is "obvious" to show that an algorithm terminates (or doesn't). Collatz conj is a nice example that it is hard to prove termination - or even impossible sometimes.
@AnthonyEsolen Stan Ulam and his colleagues at Los Alamos during WW2 were among the first to use early computers to explore the behavior of the Collatz sequence for large numbers, helping to build empirical evidence for the conjecture. They were fascinated by it.
@McCormickProf Standing room only in two different churches in Ventura county, SoCal. Also raining which discombobulates Californians :) and yet crowds came.
@mark_bauerlein very interesting talk https://t.co/NUI33E7Q6A but unfortunately the book is very expensive https://t.co/Ka53ciHgVh at least on Amazon. But of course Mirari Vos can be read free here: https://t.co/OLUvx6sg1B
