Everytime you suggest aspiring filmmakers go make stuff and put it online and show a bunch of examples of that leading to big opportunities, there are always a handful of people like "sure, but they have a following" or a resume or a bunch of viral shorts or whatever and it's like -- yeah, sure, of course.
